Marshall Young Cooper, Jr. of Henderson, NC died Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at his home. Mr. Cooper was born September 13, 1940 in Henderson, the son of the late Mishew McNeill Crudup and Marshall Young Cooper, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Bettie White Cooper; son John Downey Cooper, II (Emily Parrott); grandchildren, John Charles Cooper, Sarah Evans Cooper and Marshall Downey Cooper of Charlotte; sisters, Mishew Cooper Williams (Murray) and Gayle Cooper Kearns (the late Amos Kearns, Jr.) and sisters-in-law Susan White Stuckey (Richard ) and Lore White Fariss (Marcus). He also leaves nieces and nephews: Mishew Williams Paynter (Bill), Ragan Kearns (Sharon), Elizabeth Martin (John), Marshall Kearns, Arthur Kearns (Diane), Murray Williams, Jr.(Kathryn), Suzanne Murdock Eaddy (Paul), William Lawton Murdock (Mary Dawn), Anderson Fariss(Inslee), Julia Fariss, Trigg Fariss, and Mary Marshall Fariss.

Mr. Cooper attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria VA and was a Graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He also graduated from the Young Executive's Program at UNC. He saw service in the United States Coast Guard.

His career was spent in the textile industry as President and CEO of Harriet & Henderson Yarns, INC. During this time, he also served actively with several textile associations and boards. In addition, Mr. Cooper served on the regional board of Wachovia Bank, the Board of Visitors of the University of North Carolina, The Fifty Group and was a founding member of the Emerson's Ski Society.

As life-time member of The Church of the Holy Innocents, he was a lay reader, a chalice bearer and a member of the Vestry. As a staunch supporter of his community, Mr. Cooper was active in the creation of the Henderson YMCA, the development of the Henderson-Vance Parks and Recreation Department. He endowed several scholarships to Vance-Granville Community College and the North Carolina School of Textiles. He was a member of The Rotary Club of Henderson & was a Paul Harris Fellow, Globe - a business education partnership, President of the Public School Foundation of Henderson and served on the Maria Parham Hospital Board of Trustees. Mr. Cooper was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 1993 by the Vance County Chamber of Commerce.

The family would like to thank all the people who cared for the Cooper family but especially Randall Perkinson, Anna Williams, Judy Vaughan, Kathy Adcock, LaToya Rowlett, Toshiba Valentine, Sylvia Mayfield, Jackie Jiggetts, Jasmine Monroe and Joyce Branch.

A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Holy Innocents, Episcopal on Sunday January 15th at 2:00pm. A private burial will follow. The family will receive visitors in the Great Hall of the church after the private burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, CB #7295 UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295 or The Church of the Holy Innocents, 210 South Chestnut Street, Henderson, NC 27536 or the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by J. M. White Funeral Home.

I always enjoyed my association with Marshall at the many Textile Association meetings that we attended. We had some good times and he was always a joy to be around, a true gentleman. My thoughts are with the family at this most difficult time.
