To Denise and Bob's Family: A part of us left with Bob, and we won't be whole again until we join him in Heaven. We rejoice for him and grieve for those he left behind. Bob's quiet spirit, quick smile, love for the Lord, love for his family, love for the "boys," and love for Denise witnessed to us regularly. We'll treasure all the good times we spent together. Denise, we're "family" and plan to stick like glue. Much love.....

denise & family; i had hoped to have been in attendance, for both services...however, flight loads did not allow such to happen. travelling 'stand by' is not nice these days! i would've been there, today; had it not been for the 'oversold' flight loads! please know, that the 'aloha spirit' that bob has in his heart permeates to those who he has touched. i, for one, have been fortunate to have been 'a friend and classmate' ! altho' i was in the 32nd company, i've always been very close with 36th company classmates. my last visit with bob was after the cjcs event, lunch at mccormick & schmick's, with jack smith, denny rizzardi, jim niehus, gary storm..that's another 'sea story'...!!! my flag is flying, my candle is lit as i bid my final 'aloha' to my friend and classmate! peace be with you, denise! aloha nui loa!

Bob was my nephew through marriage. Bob was a young lad when I first knew him. He enjoyed spending the summers with his grandparents in Western MD. He was very active in Scouts, loved to eat, and attend church. Many times he would pick berries so his grandma would make him a fruit cobbler. He especially enjoyed raisin filled cookies and was always glad when someone would make a batch for him.

He had the knack of getting the most out of life and would always visit us when he was in our area.

My cousin Bobby was generous with presents from countries he traveled to in the Navy. Growing up in Deer Park, MD, I always looked forward to the post cards he was thoughtful to send. Christmastime was very special at the Robert Scott Paugh (Grandpap's) homestead in the beautiful mountains of Western MD. Bobby was always a part of the fun. He'd entertain with Naval stories and slides inbetween Scrabble games. These and many memories will live on along with the memory of Bobby's laugh.

Though his time on earth has ended, Bobby's life was full...full of family, friends, memories, and love.

Denise, my heart goes out to you.

Few people reading this guestbook knew Bob Owendoff as “Bobby”.

My cousin, Bobby, was 17 years old when I was born in 1962. He always treated me more like his little sister than a cousin. When he was in the Navy, he always brought back a souvenir doll for me from ports all over the world. I treasure those dolls to this day.

I’ve often joked about the hours we spent looking at Bobby’s slides at the Paugh family farm in Deer Park, Maryland. He would bring boxes and boxes of slides, and we’d all pile into the living room as he set up the screen and the projector and narrate his seafaring adventures. I would get SO BORED, but everyone told me it was a good education.

About 15 years ago, Bob decided that our extended family should get together for something fun, instead of just gathering at funerals. He and Aunt Vauda initiated the “Paugh Family Reunion”, which is now a 3-day annual event where dozens of our relatives enjoy a Friday night dinner, a Saturday picnic, hayrides and a corn roast at the Scott Paugh homestead, and Sunday brunch.

At times like this, we realize how many of our family members are no longer with us: Grandma and Granddaddy Paugh, my father, Aunt Oma and Uncle Don, Uncle Jerry, Uncle Rob Roy, Aunt Mildred, Frankie, Bob’s dad (my Uncle Bob), Ed, Colleen…the list seems endless.

What I wouldn’t give to have all those people assembled in that living room to watch Bobby’s slides now. But I’m sure they’re having a big family reunion in heaven and Bobby is enjoying every minute.

Dear Denise,

What is truly ironic was that on Tuesday, 8 July, I took my teenage daughters to see the Academy. One of the items I showed my daughters was the sundial Bob had done for our class. They were very fascinated by it.

I'll remember Bob as one who always had time to talk to others, or give a smile and say hello in the beloved halls of Mother Bancroft. His example will always be a goal for me.

Denise,

I did not know Bob at the Academy. We met on our first ship in 1969 and I remember him well. We had a lot of laughs together. Since I had arrived on Richard L. Page (DEG 5) several months prior to Bob, we stood a lot of bridge watches together. He was a gentleman and a scholar. You both are in my prayers.
Patrick

Dear Denise,
Bob's beautiful and gentle face is as fresh in my mind as though it was just yesterday that we spent time all together here on Amelia Island. And then my thoughts zoom back to Newport, Rhode Island, in 1969 when Bob and Patrick were about to deploy on the Richard L Page. My sister, who was in town for a couple of months, needed a car and Bob told her she could use his while he was away. During his absence, my sister and I banged up the car pretty badly due to ice on the road and a treacherous turn. We were OK but very scared to tell Bob about his car. In his wonderful way, he smiled and assured us that it was absolutely not a problem. And we all remained friends ever since!
If it hurts us this much to lose Bob, I can only imagine your own pain, Denise!
He was so lucky and happy to have you in his life. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
With love,
Suzy

Denise and family - I am so saddened to hear of the loss of my classmate and friend and your husband, Bob. I learned of his work with sundials as I went through survival training in Maine. His work was given to us to help us determine directions if we ever needed to escape, evade and return to our lines. I knew Bob quite well at the Academy and know he will be greatly missed by all of his family as well as his classmates. He was and will always be my classmate. May God comfort your family with as much care as I know God welcomed Bob to his "house"

Jack Smith

July 14, 2008

Dear Denise,

May God be with you and Bob's family at this difficult time and comfort you. As many have said, Bob will always be remembered as an extremely considerate person who always conducted himself as a gentleman to the utmost. We knew him as a gentle and genteel person of deep personal faith. He greatly enjoyed the fellowship of his classmates and company mates.

He was so very happy and proud of the 60th birthday party that you hosted for him, and which many of us attended. He commented to me that you had made it such a special and wonderful occaision for him.

It is ironic that a few days before we received the sad news, I was reflecting back on the last time that I was with Bob and several other classmates at the installation ceremony for Mike Mullen as CJCS. We all went out to lunch together and and had a wonderful time talking and joking.

We will all greatly miss his warm smile and friendship. I am sure he is looking down on all of us from above right now and smiling.

Dear Denise, I was very saddened last week to hear that Bob had died. He was a very special friend and classmate. I don't know of anyone who did not like Bob. That statement alone is a testament of Bob's place in life. He was always ready to provide a helping hand and demonstrated his love by his actions. When he was instructing at the Naval Academy, I was fortunate to run into him when things weren't going right. He always found a way to brighten my day. He always had that welcome smile and true understanding of what a friend was. We will all miss him. He is truly with the Lord. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Denise,

Bob was one of the nicest and kindest classmates in the 36th company. He was always a great pleasure to be around. And I liked to hang around with him a lot because he always laughed at my jokes! The last time I saw him was at the CNO's (Adm Mike Mullen) Change of Command. We had many of the 1968, 36 Company Classmates there and we had a grand reunion. It will always be special remembering Bob's happiness at that event. I was proud to know Bob and will always cherish his friendship.
May you always sustain yourself in the great love Bob had for all.

July 13, 2008

Dear Denise,

Audrey and I express our deepest condolences to you on the loss of Bob. Bob was a true friend, a loyal Classmate and amongst the most thoughtful person we knew. He was in my company at the Naval Academy and my roommate during the last year. Bob was the driving force in making our Class Gift, a sundial he designed, a reality. His brilliance in the field of navigation was always hidden by his shy and quiet manner. It took several months for me to learn all that he had done especially his point stick survival method. His infectious smile and laugh were his trademarks in the halls at school. When I reminded him that he wouldn’t graduate if he didn’t take his final swimming test, he laughed. He hated swimming as much as I did. But the Company Commander said, “no test, no graduation” so I dragged him down to the pool. He laughed until he got into the water but he finally passed. And in Monterey at the Naval Post Graduate School, we all found out that he had a rocket for a tennis serve and again a big grin. We will as I am sure everyone who met Bob, miss him.

Dear Denise,
We are all so devestated by Bob's untimely passing. All of us in the 36th company, class of 1968, USNA got to know and be great life-long friends with Bob and he will be greatly missed by all of us. However, his lasting gift of the USNA Sundial will remain as a long-term permanent tribute to Bob.
We all say our prayers for you and the family in these difficult times.

Dear Denise,
What does one say except, it was truely "well with his soul!" Bob was your match in walking thru life, and a spiritual leader***YOU WERE BLESSED***but the story doesn't end there.... ICor 2:9 ...Denise, you and Bob both epitomized Heb 11:1-3....and as my dad used to say to me everytime I'd go out the door, I say to you dear friend...."keep the faith baby!" Love you girl....Kathy Sullivan
