Jason Spiers Obituary

Dr. Jason Blaine Spiers CHARLOTTE - Jason Blaine Spiers, 47, of Charlotte, died suddenly in Columbia, South Carolina on November 4, 2012. Born March 2, 1965 in Augusta, Georgia, Jason was the proud son of Shirley Toole Spiers and Dudley Newton Spiers, Jr. Visitation for Dr. Spiers will be Thursday evening, November 8, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Calvary Church in the Rea Room. Funeral Services in celebration of Jason's life will be Friday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Calvary with burial immediately following in Magnolia Gardens. Following graduation from McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN he went on to attend Johns Hopkins University and medical school at the University of Tennessee - Memphis. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at the University of Alabama- Birmingham and his Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at MUSC in Charleston, SC where he met the love of his life Latessa Smith. After his training, Jason and Latessa opened their own practice in Tifton, GA and lived there for five years. Jason was a distinguished Doctor having worked at Presbyterian Pulmonary and Critical Care for approximately 9 years. He was recently serving on the faculty at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine at Palmetto Richland Hospital where he was the Director of the Intensive Care Unit. He was proud to share his knowledge of pulmonary medicine with fellows, residents and students. Family was the most important part of Jason's life. His love for travel took the family to many places. He was a great father who adored his children, loved throwing the football with his son Jackson and playing with his daughter Mary Elizabeth. Latessa and Jason recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. The family enjoys attending Calvary Church where Mary Elizabeth and Jackson are involved in children's ministries. Jason found so much joy in making friends and took the time to truly listen and deeply care for those he met both personally and professionally. Some of his most notable characteristics were his compassion, kindness, empathy, and his outgoing personality. His happiness and joyful demeanor were apparent to everyone. Survivors include Jason's beloved wife Latessa Smith Spiers, children Jackson and Mary Elizabeth, parents Dudley Newton Spiers, Jr. and Shirley Toole Spiers and brother Jon Phillip Spiers. His Mother and Father-in-law William L. and Elizabeth Ann Smith as well as his brother-in-law Jason L. Smith and three nephews and two nieces also survive him. In memory of Jason, memorial contributions may be made to: The Spiers Children's Educational Fund, C/O Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104. Seeing this reminder this morning placed a sad but big smile on my face. A flood of memories of the days gone by when Dr Spiers and Dr Giatras were self appointed ICU court jesters and politically incorrect stand up comedians. Dr Spiers, Tift Regional has missed you clinical skills since the day you left us and I have missed your friendship. Your old Tifton friend, Jeff Robbins

I remember you and your outstanding sense of humor as a stuident in my sophomore English class at Jenkins County High School. After you graduated, I was happy to learn that you had chosen medicine as your vocation. I knew you would be a great doctor. I had lost track of you and your family over the years, and was shocked to learn of your unfortunate demise. You are with the angels now. May God wrap his loving arms around your family at this difficult time.

My father was in ICU at Palmetto Health Richland on November 4th. Dr. Spiers had the most difficult task of telling us that there was nothing that could be done medically to help Daddy. He broke this news to us in the most compassionate, empathetic and professional manner possible. We were shocked and saddened on Sunday the 5th to learn of Dr. Spiers' death. He was a truly gifted physician and I am sorry that future families in the same situation as ours won't have Dr. Spiers with them on their journey. He helped our family so much, and, I believe, greeted my Dad in heaven the next day. I pray for God's Peace for all who knew him.

Having the opportunity to work with Dr. Spiers was a joy and privilege. He had an infectious smile and positive attitude that inevitably would cause you to smile and even laugh while in his presence. Despite trying moments at work, he made the best of any situation. He treated all those he met with respect and grace and never hesitated in sharing his knowledge when asked. How he was able to remember everyone's name (first, middle, and last) was such a gift that only added to his charm. He was genuinely interested in those with whom he worked. He made everyone feel special.
His family was of the greatest importance to him although he never neglected the requirements of his career. He took great joy in showing pictures of his children and wife to us, even sharing them through Facebook! He was so proud of them all. He always spoke of the travels he had taken with them and the ones he planned on taking.
Know that your dad really loves you and carry that in your hearts every day.
It saddens me greatly to lose such a wonderful, bright person from whom I and many others have learned so much. My thoughts and prayers to his loved ones during this difficult time.

Dr.Spiers, we became hospital friends when you saw and laughed at the sticker on my lunch box,(What would Nixon do)! I always enjoyed our conversations and I can only hope to see the world through your lens of love and humor. There is nothing more I can add except to say that your loss presents us with a vacuum that we now must ourselves try to fill. No one filled a space like you Dr. Spiers, the paradigm of affability and profesionalism.

Heaven just got a little brighter! May you rest in peace, Dr. Spiers. I will never forget you!

November 9, 2012

Dr. Spiers was truly one of the greatest. He loved his work and he loved his family. He was always bragging on his children and quick to tell you all that they had accomplished. He had the special knack of making everyone feel important. He always took the time to talk with his patients and their families no matter how busy he was. He truly made a difference in all that he did. It was always a good feeling to go into work and see his name as the intensivist for ICU. May HIS grace, peace, and protection be on you as you begin this walk in your lives and may you always know how much you were loved by such a special man.

Dr Spiers will be missed tremendously at Richland. He was joyful, kind hearted and compassionate and above all a fantastic doctor who truly loved his life's work. He was an amazing teacher and friend to everyone he met, and never met a stranger. I have never met his family but I feel as if I know them from the stories of travel and pictures in his phone. He was so proud of his family and I know he watches from above with that same pride. God bless you and keep you in the difficult times ahead.

Dr. Spiers...what a CHARACTER! He had friends in all parts of the hospital, not just in ICU! Maybe because you could hear his voice down the hall! He was so friendly, funny, and unpredictable! I am confident that we all have stories we could tell. He enjoyed life surely because of the perspective his work placed in his path. Latessa, please know how sorry I am for your loss. My heart aches for you in this time of devastation. And Mary Elizabeth and Jackson, your Dad made such a difference in the lives of others...and he adored you both. Somehow he was able to manage both aspects in life that were dear to him; medicine and family, and make it look easy. The entire medical community in this area has been in sheer shock upon the knowledge of his passing. He will truly be missed by many.
