Maurice D. Gawlas "Dean" CHARLOTTE - Dean crossed the Rainbow Bridge on February 27, 2013. He was born in Johnstown, PA on November 20, 1930. He attended Girard College for elementary and high school in Philadelphia, PA and graduated in 1949. He worked for Bethlehem Steel before enlisting in the U.S. Army serving four years, eighteen months and one day in the Korean War. He then attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent his professional life in the Aluminum industry taking positions in Ghana, West Africa and Venezuela, South America. When he retired from aluminum he joined Safeco Insurance as facilities manager at their Hermitage, TN campus. When Safeco sold the facility to Deloitte Services, LP he remained as Facility Supervisor. He retired from Deloitte Services, LP and moved to Charlotte, NC. Dean was a real family man and loved to spend time playing cards and barbequing with his family. He was also an avid tennis player and golfer. He was predeceased by son Mark Evan Gawlas. He is survived by his wife Jane Anne Layton Gawlas, son Craig Gawlas, Oklahoma; daughters Paula Gawlas, Arizona and Mary Katherine Bruce (Lenny), Tennessee; grandchildren Paige Finney and Davis Finney, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the
or St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Memorial service will be Saturday, March 2, 2013, 2:00 p.m. St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte. Fr Frank O'Rourke officiating. The Gawlas family is being served by J. B. Tallent Funeral Service.
