Pauline Green Carter LEXINGTON - Pauline Bernhardt Carter, 90, passed away peaceably at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte on October 2, 2013. "Peeny" was born to Nona Thompson Bernhardt and Paul McRae Bernhardt on August 23, 1923 in Lexington, NC. After graduating from Lexington High School, she attained degrees from both St. Mary's Junior College in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She remained an avid Tar Heel fan her entire life. During her Lexington years, she worked as a case agent for the Davidson County Department of Social Services and was a long-time member of the Charity League. Throughout her life, even after moving to Greensboro, "Peeny" maintained a close relationship with her Lexington friends. A small group formed a birthday club and for over 50 years they met regularly to celebrate each other's special day. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lillian Thompson Bernhardt, husbands, Benjamin Franklin Green, Jr. of Lexington and Harry Clifton Carter of Wallace and Greensboro, and a step-son, Harry J. Carter of Summit, New Jersey. "Peeny" is survived by her daughter, Lillian Green Yarborough of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son, Franklin B. Green and wife Anna of Richmond, VA and son, Paul M. Green of Charlotte; step-daughter Natalie C. Freeman and husband Joe of Greensboro; step daughter-in-law, Mickey S. Carter of Greensboro; five grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and fifteen step great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and nurses at Southminster for their loving care during her stay there. The family will receive visitors at the Piedmont Funeral Home in Lexington on Sunday, October 6 from 3:00 until 5:00. A service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church , where she was a long time member, on Monday, October 7 at 10:00. A reception will be held in the fellowship hall immediately following, and prior to a private graveside service.
