Charles Rufus McCoy, Jr. CHARLOTTE - Charles Rufus McCoy, Jr., 92, of Charlotte, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013, at Asbury Care Center. Charles was born into the home of his late parents Charles McCoy, Sr. and Lucy Torrence McCoy. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2PM on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2PM. Pastor Keith Copeland will be leading the service. Charles was a three year veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps. He retired from Overnite Transportation Company after 27 years of service. Charles was a member of the YMCA where he was avid swimmer and excellent diver. He loved going to the beach and also playing golf. He was an active member of the Derita Lion's Club for many years. He was a long standing member of Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and was always willing to help. He was friendly with everyone and always had a great sense of humor. Charles was preceded in death by his brother John and by his loving wife Wanda whom he was devoted to for 64 years. He is survived by his son Charles McCoy, III of Bend, OR; daughters: Cathy (Chris) Fisher of Mooresville, IN and Sheila (Mark) Ervin of Charlotte, NC; sisters: Jane Tompkins and Ann Darracott both of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Alison Cheldelin of Bend, OR, Lauren Tonn of Portland, OR, and Ashley Kibbey of Indianapolis, IN; and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Charles' name to Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church, 101 West Sugar Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28213.
