Robert Earl Armstrong CATAWBA - Robert Earl Armstrong, 66, passed away on Saturday October 12, 2013. Born on January 7, 1947 in Garrettsville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Betty Shattenberg Armstrong. Robert was a Veterans Service Officer with the Charlotte VSO. He was an instrumental force in the building of the Mecklenburg County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Charlotte, NC. He was the author of the inscriptions found on the face of the Memorial. Robert served proudly in the United States Army (4th Infantry Division) during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Cross. He was a true American Hero. Besides his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his sisters Joyce Mathey and Francie Arrington. Robert is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan Maher Armstrong; sons Troy and his wife Michelle, Mark and his wife, Leslie; grandchildren Fischer and Brooke; brother Jeffrey and several 'granddoggies'. A Memorial Service will take place at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at St. Mary's Chapel - Mecklenburg County Vietnam Veterans Memorial (Thompson Park) 1129 East 3rd St. at Kings Drive, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert's memory may be made to Metrolina Vietnam Veterans Association, 2133 Greenway Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204-3317 or Carolina Bassett Hound Rescue, PO. Box 80082, Charleston, SC 29416. The Good Samaritan Funeral Home in Denver is assisting the Armstrong Family.
