Eugene Wilson Ayers "Gene" CHARLOTTE - Eugene "Gene" Wilson Ayers died in his sleep Saturday, May 3, 2014, in Charlotte. Gene turned 82 on April 28th and is survived by his wife Joyce Ayers; daughters and sons-in-law Tenley and Robin Andrews and Tracy and Wayne Saxon; and son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Peggy Ayers. Gene, "Bibi," is survived by six grandchildren: Matt Ayers (31), Erin Andrews (28), Devin Andrews (25), Alex Rundell (21), Madison Ayers (19) and Taylor Ayers (17). Son of Ebenezer Ayers and Alice Singleton Ayers, Gene was born in Suffolk, Va., and grew up in Greenville, N.C. A Corporal in the U.S. Army, he was a forward artillery observer in the Korean War and later graduated from East Carolina University with an AB degree in accounting. Gene married Joyce Bagley in 1953 and eventually moved to Charlotte, where he worked as a chemical salesman for the majority of his adult life. An active member of the community, Gene was a charter member and long-standing elder of SouthPark Christian Church, eventually receiving emeritus status. He volunteered his time as baseball and softball coach and president of Park Sharon Youth Baseball Association. He helped to found and eventually served as Scout Master of Troop 102 in Charlotte. A lover of history, he served as docent for the Charlotte Mint Museum, was an avid genealogist and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Gene loved people, especially children, and positively impacted the lives of everyone he got to know. Quick to smile and easy to laugh, Gene's great sense of humor and loving aura lives on in all of us who are better for having known him. He was the best father a kid could have. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at SouthPark Christian Church, 6650 Park South Drive, Charlotte with The Reverend Greg Jarrell officiating. J.B.
