Marsha Emily (Suchara) Ackerman(1944 - 2018)

This is the story of Marsha Emily (Suchara) Ackerman: Dedicated professional, giving Christian and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Marsha's story begins on May 10, 1944 in Detroit, Mich. She was born the middle child of Stanley and Sophia Suchara, and grew up in Hamtramck. Marsha was a proud graduate of Cass Tech High School and classmate of Diana Ross. After high school graduation she went on to pursue her nursing degree and later her Masters degree from Mercy College. It was only a matter of time before her path crossed that of Joseph Richard Ackerman in his black leather jacket. They fell in love and were married on April 24, 1965. A few months after their wedding the couple took a quick trip to the upper peninsula. The story goes that they made the trip from Detroit to Tahquamenon Falls and back in record time as Marsha had the 1964 Corvette convertible humming down I-75 at over 100 miles per hour!
Joe and Marsha moved to Sterling Heights, Mich. and had three sons; Joe (Paula) of Munising, Chris (Michele) of Cheboygan and Dave (Mausami) of Mattawan. The family moved to Washington Township where Marsha balanced her career as a nursing home administrator with raising the boys. This included attending many baseball and soccer games in the now infamous brown conversion van. Together the family attended St. Andrews Catholic Church in Rochester. Marsha served on the church council and taught seventh grade catechism for seven years.
Nearing retirement, Marsha and Joe returned to northern Michigan. This time they traveled I-75 in a Chrysler-Something-or-Other and at a considerably slower speed. They settled in Cheboygan and became members of Sacred Heart church where Marsha gave her time and her heart to being a reader, greeter and sacristan.
Marsha was a regular at the public library, often finishing multiple books in one week. It would be fair to say that when not involved with a book or crossword, she was on the road or the trail, putting hundreds of miles on her walking shoes (shoes that she most certainly found at a great price at DSW - she was a savvy shopper). She often joked that the walking helped to balance the effects of her baking; which she did well and did often.
Marsha loved her grandchildren; Abigail Ackerman (Fairbanks, Alaska), Noah, Kelsea and Marissa Ackerman (Munising, Mich.) Ethan and Nolan Ackerman (Mattawan, Mich.) and great grand daughters, Kinzley and Kiley Krohnfeldt (Fairbanks, Alaska). She attended as many events and activities as possible. Time at Grandma Marsha's house often included playing "Ocean" and eating Grandma's Salad.
In September 2017 Marsha was diagnosed with cancer. For months she fought the disease; bravely and optimistically, putting concerns for her family before her own. Saturday, April 14, 2018 marked the end of Marsha's story here on Earth and the beginning of her eternal story in heaven. She is preceded in death by her mother, father and brother, Dennis.
In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Marsha is survived by her sister Diana Ackerman of Warren, Mich. and many loved nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Sacred Heart Church, 4989 Polish Line Road, Cheboygan.
