Obituary Condolences

Bennett Zaiken, 89, of Rochester, died Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. Ben Zaiken was born October 31, 1921 in Chicago, IL to Joseph and Bessie (Gechman) Zaiken. He is a graduate of Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL with a BA in Business. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy from 1943 - 1946 during WWII, and was an active participant during the D-Day invasion. During this event, he made over 80 round trips across the English Channel supporting the allied troops. He married Lynn Davis on November 4, 1951 in Chicago, IL. While working at Alexander Smith Carpet in Chicago, he became the youngest sales manager ever for that company. He owned and operated Ben Zaiken Carpet Specialty for over 25 years. Ben was a member of Chicago Floorcovering Association, B'nai Br'ith International, and ROMEO's (Retired Old Men Eating Out). He enjoyed classical music, poker, and playing board games with his grandchildren. Ben is survived by his wife, Lynn of Rochester, MN; three sons, David P. Zaiken (Janis) of San Rafael, CA, Kenneth A. Zaiken (Mary) of Rochester, MN and Eliot J. Zaiken (Meredith) of Covington, GA; eight grandchildren (Heather, Lyndi (Ryen), Amanda, Beth, Brenley, Jessica, Zachary, and Michael); two great-grandchildren (Kyla and Avalene); and one sister, Phyllis Klapman (Jim) of Glenview, IL. A Funeral Service at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 with Rabbi Michelle Werner officiating. Visitation occurs at the home of Ken & Mary Zaiken, 1704 11th St.,SW, Rochester, MN.
