Walter Zapfel

1928 - 2016

Walter J. Zapfel was called to his eternal rest on Thursday, April 14, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Elaine (Klusmeyer) for 62 years; loving father of Cheryl Lillie (John), Susan Gehm (Robert), and Ron Zapfel (Stacie); proud "Papa" to six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Walter was born in 1928 in Chicago, IL to Carl and Caroline Zapfel. He graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a degree in Structural Engineering, working at DeLeuw Cather in Chicago and Phoenix and with the Parson's Corp. in Phoenix on many road, bridge, and light-rail projects over a career spanning 40 years. A life-long Lutheran, Walter was active in churches in both Chicago and Scottsdale. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert. A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1313 Mill St., Naperville, IL on Saturday, June 18 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill South Cemetery, 11333 S. Central, Oak Lawn, IL. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to your favorite charity in Walter's name.
