Converse, Shirley (McCoy) - Winnetka
Converse, Shirley McCoy Shirley Converse was born in 1918 and died on January 21, 2015, at the age of 96. She lived in Hubbard Woods and Winnetka for most of her first 70 years, graduating from New Trier High School in 1936 and attending Grinnell College. Her favorite place in the world was her Uncle Charlie's cottage on Tomahawk Lake near Minocqua, Wisconsin. Life was busy for the mother of five children, but she still found time to pursue her many interests. Shirley served on the PTA, helped establish the Heritage Congregational Church, supported numerous conservative candidates for political office and played bridge which she continued into her late 90's. Macramé, pottery, home updating, refinishing furniture and yoga received her best efforts, but she was particularly interested in the correct use of grammar and living a healthy lifestyle and was active in NOHA (Nutrition for Optimal Health Association) for many years. In her 50's she had a large organic vegetable garden, and, in her 60's, she turned to a macrobiotic diet, arriving for lunch with her sushi tote. In her 70th year she moved to Sun City, AZ, living in a condominium garden apartment and joined a bicycle club which took long rides five days a week. At 85 she typed up her life story for her family, which concluded with: "Live your life honorably; don't wait until you are sick to start eating right and exercising; do the best you can with what you've got." and "Start from where you are, not from where you wish you were." Her husband of 71 years, Burnham, predeceased her. She is survived by her five children, Robin (Catherine) Converse, Judy Birkinbine, Arlan (Marilyn) Converse, Phil (Karen) Converse, Gail (Emery) Fair; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be planned for later in the Spring of 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Oaks Employee Scholarship Fund, 10015 W. Royal Oak Road, Sun City, AZ 85351.
