Anita Kapsis, 95, died peacefully on January 9, 2013, in Chicago, Ill. Born in New York City in 1917 to Bessie and Maurice Schein, she was raised in New York and Chicago. George, her husband for seventy-one years, passed away three days earlier. Anita graduated from Senn high school, received her BA in 1937 and her MA in French in 1962 from Northwestern University
in Evanston, Illinois. She had a long and distinguished career as a foreign language teacher at Roosevelt, Amundsen, and Mather high schools where she touched many young lives. Like her husband, Anita was passionate about classical music. She had studied voice in her youth and became a great fan of the Lyric Opera. Throughout her life Anita was active in Chicago politics and in progressive causes, especially civil rights and the peace movement. Anita will be remembered for her engaging personal charm and as a caring friend. She is survived by her loving children: Robert of Great Neck, NY, and Rebecca of Santa Monica, CA, her grandchildren: Jonathan of San Diego, CA, and James of Alexandria, Virginia, and great grand children: Julia, Johanna, and Cora. A private memorial service will be hosted at a future date. The family requests that memorial gifts be sent to WFMT radio.
