Anthony Batko

Anthony J."Tony" Batko, 81, passed away on January 11, 2013. Son of the late Anthony A. and Frances nee Duratinksy Batko; cherished husband of Alice Schreyer Batko and the late Susan nee Boyle Batko; beloved father of Ann Batko and Ellen (Rich) Nolan; adoring grandfather of Maclean, Nora, Evan, and Lucy. Tony was a graduate of Northwestern University and served for three years as an Air Force pilot. He was the founding president of Vocab Incorporated, a publisher and developer of educational materials. Tony was a lifelong Chicagoan devoted to civic improvement, serving on the boards and as president of the Chicago-Valentine Boys & Girls Clubs and the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs; 12 years with the Citizens Committee for Employment, for which he interviewed prisoners about to be released for possible employment; a six-year term on the Riverside, Illinois, Library Board as an elected member; and co-chair of the Chicago Public Library Group, which formed a coalition that stopped the City of Chicago from putting the central library in an abandoned department store and influenced the building of a new facility, the Harold Washington Library. Tony was a past president of the Union League Club of Chicago and the Chicago Literary Club, and a past director of the Caxton Club of Chicago. Visitation Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, 4:00 pm until time of service 8:00 pm at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Rd., Skokie. Interment Private.
