Barry Bernstein(1930 - 2014)

Barry Bernstein of Chicago died peacefully at home in Chicago, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, New York in November 1930 to Louise Freed and Michael David Bernstein. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and City College of New York. He received his PHD in Mathematics from Indiana University and went on to develop the mathematical model known as BKZ. He taught for over 40 years at the Illinois Institute of Technology as a Professor of Mathematics and Chemical Engineering. He was an avid traveler and he and his surviving spouse Judy covered the globe, enjoying such places as Vietnam, Thailand and India as well as trekking in France and Italy. He was a life-long learner and would entertain his family with witty poetry and fun word-plays. Besides his devoted wife Judith Bonem, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Lynn and Robert Dahl; Jill and Sam Nusner; Robin Kipnis and Penn Ritter; David Kipnis and Catherine Pagano and William Kipnis and his companion Lorel Greene. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ilana, Lev and Leora Nusner, Aaron and Joshua Dahl, Sam. Eric and Caleb Ritter, Luke and Oliver Kipnis and Ryan Kipnis. Burial will be private.
