David Henry Nelson, Sr., 97, passed away on April 9, 2014 in Evanston, IL at Westminster Place surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Ann Whitley Nelson, daughter, Marti (George) Lannert, Evanston, IL, sons, Hank (Nan) Nelson, Topeka, KS and Sam (Karen) Nelson, Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Whitley Nelson. He and Mary Ann raised their children in Golf and Glenview from 1949-2003. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was born in Chicago to Charles M. and Martha (Noelke) Nelson on January 9, 1917. Dave graduated from Francis W. Parker School and Yale University
. Upon graduation he went to work for Clow Corporation in Chicago. He served in the US Navy
during World War II
, a majority of his time on the USS Louisville and USS Appalachian. After the war he went back to work for Clow Corporation, working there until he retired in 1974 as Senior Vice President. He continued to work in mergers and acquisitions for a number of years. As a life long Chicagoan, he was an enthusiastic Chicago sports fan and a Northwestern Football season ticket holder. He was a voracious reader, who enjoyed history, biographies, and the Bible. In addition to his wife and children, he had a large family of nieces and nephews who lived in the Chicago area and gathered regularly for holidays. Private family memorial services will be held.
