Dorothy MARCHI SWISHER

Dorothy Marchi Swisher, age 93, passed away on September 30 in Seattle, Washington, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. Born in Lincoln, NE, to Marie and Winfred O. Carlson, Dorothy started her singing career early, studying with a University professor from childhood. She received a BA from the University of Nebraska, an MA in Music and an M.Ed. from Northwestern University. She sang for the Chicago Opera Company and also in prominent churches and dinner clubs in Chicago and the surrounding areas. She married Pietro Marchi, a renowned opera coach. When the company closed, she worked for the Chicago and Evanston, Illinois, schools. She taught Music, English, and History, and also served as assistant principal. Later in life she married William Swisher, a Medical Doctor in Evanston. She cared deeply about education and encouraged young people throughout her life to continue learning. Dorothy is survived by her sister Elaine Mueller, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Pietro Marchi, her second husband, William Swisher, and her sister Eloise Hammond.
