Eugenia Merczak(1939 - 2014)

photoEugenia "Jean" Merczak, nee Sloan. Passed away on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at home from her long battle with cancer. She was born on January 27, 1939 in Martinsburg, WV to Harold and Maxine Sloan. She attended Alvernia High School, University of Illinois at Chicago, and received her Masters degree in Social Services from the University of Chicago. On February 8, 1958 she married Richard Merczak and together they had three daughters, whom they raised in Park Ridge, IL. Jean and Richard moved to Northfield, IL in 1986. She worked as the head of children services at Catholic Charities in Waukegan, IL, until retiring in 2003. After retiring, Jean and Richard continued their global adventures, a passion that they upheld until only a year ago. She also volunteered at The Art Institute of Chicago, for ten years. Jean was an inspiration to all she met. She is the beloved wife of Richard. Loving mother of Elizabeth (Robert) Winkowski, Jr., Susan "Lily" and Linda Merczak. Devoted grandmother of Vanessa (Marcus) Hale, Adaline Winkowski, Fiona and Aidan O'Reilly and Gavin Dinolfo; great-grandmother to Bella Crews and Willa O'Reilly. Dear sister of John (Francie) Sloan, Jane (Dozier Hammond) Sloan, Steve Sloan and the late Eleanor Counts, Joe and Tom Sloan. Sister-in-law to Naty and Lillian Sloan. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation Thursday, June 12, 3-9- p.m. at RYAN-PARKE FUNERAL HOME, 120 S. Northwest Hwy., Park Ridge. Funeral Friday, 9:30 a.m. prayers from funeral home to St. Paul of the Cross Church.140 S. Northwest Hwy., Park Ridge. Mass 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Adalbert Cemetery, Niles.
