iconphoto Frank Johnson, 92, of Glenview, IL, passed away February 22, 2013. Beloved husband of Marianne, nee Ludden; loving father of Bruce (Mary) and the late Thomas James; and cherished grandfather of Bradley, Jennifer, Thomas, Christopher, Peter and Caitlin. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Maude, nee Allman, and Eric and his brothers Eric and James. Born December 20, 1920 in Alexander North Carolina just outside Asheville, Frank moved at an early age to Glenview, IL which he would then call home for the remainder of his life. In May of 1939, he left New Trier High School to enlist in the Marine Corps. He entered the Marines in San Diego via the 6th rgmnt, 2nd Marine Brigade, two and a half years prior to Pearl Harbor and finished in 1945 as a gunnery sergeant after two months on Okinawa with the 29th rgmt of the 6th Marine Division. Post war, he found work as an electrician's apprentice with CBS then located in the Wrigely Building. Forty years later he would retire as Director of Facilities and Services at CBS Chicago. He had a high mechanical aptitude and a strong appetite for how things worked. Frank learned building mechanics from his work at CBS and taught himself electronics, repairing such devices and doing other projects for neighbors and friends. Although he never owned a boat, Frank enjoyed boating. He often assisted his boat owning friends in navigating, operating, and maintaining their crafts. He was thankful for a full life. He once quipped, "I did pretty good for someone who grew up eating lard sandwiches." Yes you did Frank. Semper Fidelis. Service and interment private.
