Helen Workman(1917 - 2013)

photoHelen Workman, 96, of Glenview, passed away September 11, 2013. Born July 11, 1917 in Wabasha, MN, she attended Wabasha Public School and The University of Minnesota for two years. She taught school from 1939-1940 in Harmony, MN where she met her husband, H. Ross Workman. In 1940 Helen returned to Winona State College and received her bachelor's degree in commercial education. On February 7, 1942 she married H. Ross Workman in Champaign, IL. Her husband was stationed at the Air Corps Technical School in Rantoul, IL. During the war she taught school while her husband served 30 months in the southeast Asia combat theater. In 1946 Helen and Ross went back to Chicago where he attended law school, graduating in 1949. Helen worked for E.L. Grady Coal and Cook County until 1955. During their residence in Des Plaines, Helen was very active in social and charity affairs. She served for nine years on the Des Plaines Library Board, over 40 years on the women's board of Lawrence Hall Youth Services in Chicago, and various other social and charitable activities. In 1979 they moved to Glenview where she continued her charitable activities especially at St. David's Episcopal Church. Helen is survived by her husband of 72 years, H. Ross Workman, a retired executive of Allstate Insurance; cousin Lois (Tom) Gilchrist and other relatives in Oregon and the west glacier of Montana. She is preceded in death by her cousin Shirley Bennett. Other survivors include Shirley's children, Barbara, George, Kirk, Karen and their children. Visitation Saturday, September 21st from 10:30 AM until time of funeral service 11 AM at St. David's Episcopal Church, 2410 Glenview Rd., Glenview. Interment private in Wabasha, MN.
