John C. Schmidt, 84, retired Oak Park firefighter and EMT with 31 years of service; Loving husband to June nee GORMLEY; Wonderful father to John (Bridget) Schmidt and Janet (Gerry) Karolewicz; Amazing grandfather to Tony (Erin) Gallano, Dana (Dan) Traharne, Kristy (Brian) Brooke, Shelly (Ryan Smith) Schmidt, Rachel (Andy) Contreras, Michele (Scott) Pentacost, Dustin (Amy) Karolewicz, Austin (Veronica) Siems and Parker Siems; great-grandfather to Danny, Dylan, McKenna, Ian, Joshua, Alyssa, CJ, Tyler, Aiden, AJ, Grant, Emmie, Tiffany, Bradyn and Miles. Beloved son of the late Lillian and the late Nicholas Schmidt; Dear brother of Ed (Sandy) Schmidt, the late Bob (the late Kay) Schmidt, the late Mary (Bob) Fugle and the late Audrey (the late John) Schwartz; Fond uncle to many nieces and nephews; Grateful neighbor to Jim and Janet Galati and Jim and Nancy Grow. Special friend to Phyllis Jacobs, Ray Damrow, Jim Galati, Barb Bradley and Tom and Kathy Wozniak. John had a special bond with his cousin Herbert Schmidt, who lives in West Bend, Wisconsin on a homestead that has been in the family for 100 years. John was a farmer at heart. Visitation Thursday March 13th from 3 - 9 p.m. at Cumberland Chapels 8300 W. Lawrence Ave., Norridge. Funeral services begin Friday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home proceeding to St. Eugene Church for 10:00 a.m. Mass. Interment to follow at Irving Park Cemetery.
