Michael Monroe (born Massa), 97, died peacefully on January 29, 2013. Son of the late Eride (Spadoni) and Giorgio Massa of Philadelphia; loving husband of the late Josephine (LaBalbo) Monroe; loving father of Elizabeth (Dale) Monroe-Cook of Oak Park; fond grandfather of Brenna Monroe-Cook and Jonathan Monroe-Cook. Preceded in death by brother, Raphael Massa, and sisters, Eveline Marciano and Rita Tentarelli. Survived by brothers, Alexander (late Laura) DeFonso and George (Marlene) Massa, and by sister, Leanilda (John) Wozniak. Michael was a resident student at Girard College in Philadelphia from age 9 until graduation at 16. He studied at the University of Michigan
for 3 years. Receiving a medical deferment from the military, he suspended college to work during the war years, but completed his degree at the University of Miami in 1946. In 1947 he married Josephine. They lived in Florida for most of the next 50 years where Michael worked as an accountant, primarily in electrical contracting. They moved to the Chicago area in 1996 to be near family after Josephine suffered a stroke. Michael was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of River Forest and its choir and a supporter of Woodside Bible Chapel in Maywood. He participated at Mather More than a Café and received a national service award for his work through AmeriCorps. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 16, at 10:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of River Forest, 7551 Quick Ave., River Forest, IL 60305. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of River Forest or Loyola Hospice.
