Robert Joe Lill, 95, died peacefully at home in Chicago on April 8. He was born December 27, 1917 in San Diego to Faye and Joe Grigsby Lill and raised in East Lansing, MI, with his sister Althea, and brothers Etchison Grigsby (Greg) and Melvin. Bob matriculated at Harvard class of 1940 and finished his BA degree at Michigan State University
. In 1943 he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corps and served in France and Germany before his discharge in 1946. He then earned graduate degrees in business administration and political science from the University of Michigan
. In 1960 he won the Sells Gold Award for the highest score in the nation on his CPA exam which won him a handshake from Mayor Richard J. Daley. On a train out of Union Station in 1963 he met his future wife, Charolette Evans of Turtle Lake, ND; they were married on June 6, 1966 and settled in Lakeview. Bob served as Business Manager for the Chicago Public Library, Chief Accountant of the Water Department, and he retired at age 70 as Comptroller of the Chicago City Colleges, whereupon he immediately took another job to keep busy. In later years he loved reading history, watching Jeopardy, playing word games, and having powdered doughnuts with his morning cup of boiling coffee. He won his last game of Scrabble on April 2nd. He is survived by his wife Charolette; brother Melvin and Marge Lill of Las Vegas; sister-in-law Glad Lill of Hemet, CA; his children Jodi Blasen, Michael, Thomas, and Jonathan; their spouses Richard, Jenny, and Corrine; grandchildren Nathaniel, Torin, Wesley, Elena, Ewan, and Alexander; and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by all. A memorial service will be announced for July.
