Thomas P. Cunningham, age 85, of La Grange, Illinois, was born to the late Joseph Bernard ("JB") and Elizabeth Cunningham in Fort Wayne, Indiana on November 17, 1927 and passed peacefully on June 5, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Tom married Lillian DeSitter, his loving wife of 62 years, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in La Grange. He was the proud, caring and supportive father to Nancy (Edward) Mello, Thomas (Nancy), Mark (Elizabeth), John (Jill) and the late Susan Cunningham. Tom was a devoted grandfather to Melanie, Alex and the late Christopher Wilcox, Claire, Luke, Quinn, Kevin, Juliann, Ellyn and the late Katherine Cunningham. He is survived by his beloved brother, David and numerous dear nieces and nephews. A 1949 graduate of the University of Illinois
with a B.S. in Horticulture and a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Tom spent two college summers living in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska employed by the Alaska Railroad and the National Park Service. He spent another summer as a Glacier National Park tour bus driver. After graduation, he served in the U.S Army for two years at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. For many years, Tom was an owner of DeSitter Flooring, growing the business into one of the largest and most successful flooring companies in the Chicago area. He took great pride in the business and remained actively engaged into his retirement. A man of many talents and skills, Tom was happiest when spending time with family. He enjoyed travel, fishing trips with his sons, playing cards with friends and family, and spending time with his grandchildren. Tom was an avid reader and enjoyed following the markets. He was an involved parishioner at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church for more than fifty years, serving as an active member of the Retired Men's Club. His passion and talent for landscaping was exhibited as a member of the Ashbrook Homeowner's Association Board where Tom managed the landscaping of the development's common areas. He enjoyed his last few years at Plymouth Place where he served on the Advisory Finance Board. Tom Cunningham led with integrity, intelligence, good humor, common sense and faith. The extraordinary outpouring of well wishes and thoughtfulness that surrounded Tom during the past few months is a testament to the special place he held in countless hearts.
