William K. "Bill" Hunter, age 87, a resident of Kildeer for 42 years, passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 2, 2012. Bill was born January 3, 1925 in Plainville, Kansas to Della and Elmer Hunter. At an early age, he moved with his parents to Denver, Colorado where he was educated in the public schools and was a star of the high school wrestling team. After he earned his college degree in Petroleum Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines in 1947, he accepted a position with the Universal Oil Products Co. where he met his future wife, Mary Ellen (nee Roth). He worked first at a UOP research facility in McCook, Illinois, and then in the field, traveling to refinery start-ups. in 1954, he was assigned to the new UOP offices in Des Plaines, and he and his family settled in Mount Prospect where they enjoyed 15 happy years and made many good friends. In 1967, he was promoted to manager of UOP's Air Correction Division with offices in Darien, Connecticut and in Germany, and the family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut. In 1970, Bill left UOP to return to the Chicago area where he and a partner established Air Resources Inc. in Palatine, a successful air pollution control engineering company. After ten years at ARI, he retired and in retirement worked part-time as a consultant and expert witness in oil and chemical matters. His expert opinions were solicited as testimony in various trials on behalf of many law firms in both the U.S. and Canada. Bill is survived by Mary Ellen, his loving wife of 64 years, and his two sons of whom he was extremely proud: David who earned a PhD degree in Mathematics at Princeton University
and Charles who is a graduate of Harvard Law School. Always ready with a smile and a friendly jest, Bill loved fishing in the Boundary Waters area of Minnesota and traveling around Europe and Canada with Mary Ellen.
