JONAS ROBERT COHLER Jr.

Jonas Robert Cohler, Jr., age 77, of New York, passed away on August 28, 2011 after a long illness. Born July 15, 1934 in Lake Forest to Betty Cahn Cohler and Jonas Robert Cohler, Dr. Cohler is survived by his loving children Eric, Jennifer, Matthew and Luke; Jennifer's husband Alan Mason; by his grandchildren Andrew and Colin Mason; by his brother and sister Bertram Cohler and Betsy Lemal; by his former spouses Jane Supino and Lisa Selsby Cohler. A Psychoanalyst for over 50 years, he graduated from the University of Michigan, attended Northwestern University Medical School and received his PhD from Harvard University. Dr. Cohler received analytical training from New York's William Alanson White Institute, and served as past president. A respected leader in his professional community, he was a jazz aficionado and skilled yachtsman. Dr. Cohler is the great-great-grandson of Bernard Kuppenheimer, who, in the early 1860's, founded what would become one of the world's largest manufacturers of tailored men's clothing. Headquartered in Chicago, the House of Kuppenheimer provided many of the United States Army and Navy officers' uniforms during World Wars I and II. In 1982, the company was acquired by Hart Schaffner Marx. Long involved in civic causes and philanthropy, Dr. Cohler's family built Northwestern University's Cahn Auditorium and helped transform the architectural landscape of the city by sponsoring Bauhaus School refuge designers and architects relocation to Chicago during the Nazi rise to power. A private service will be held September 9 in New York. Interment will be at Chicago's Rosehill Cemetery, September 10. In lieu of flowers, please direct contributions to the Susan G.
