Ray was my first friend in baseball research. Our letter, email and telephone relationship began in 1966. I am deeply sadden by his death and by the fact that he did not get to see my book, which he certainly helped with numerous times over the years. I mailed a copy to him on April 15, two days before his passing. Perhaps the inscription will be meaningful to his family.

Ray was a wonderful person. This poem says it all, rest in peace.
"THE MEASURE OF A MAN"
Not - How did he die? But - How did he live?
Not - What did he gain? But - What did he give?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not - What was his station? But - had he a heart?
And - How did he play his God-given part?
Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer?
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not - What was his church? Not - What was his creed?
But - Had he befriended those really in need?
Not - What did the sketch in the newspaper say?
But - How many were sorry when he passed away?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.

I only met Ray once at his home in Naperville. I only wish I could have crossed paths with him earlier living as close as we did.

Ray was a great baseball researcher. He was the "Go to person" if you wanted information about a baseball player. Ray was always quick with an answer too. He will be greatly missed by SABR members and many others. I was fortunate to have know him. Rest In Peace Ray.
