Jimmie Alford Obituary

Jimmie R. Alford, LL.D., L.H.D., CFRE died on December 18, 2012, at age 69, after a sudden heart attack. Jimmie was born in Madisonville, KY on November 24, 1943 to Loren and Dora Mae Alford. He has two siblings Betty Peveler and Larry Alford. The family moved to Chicago in the early 1950's. On June 28, 1998, he married his best friend and true partner, Maree G. Bullock. He adored and celebrated his family, including his children Ann, Sean, Alan and Joshua and grandchildren Collin and Casey. He took immense joy in spending time with his family and never went a day without letting them know the depth of his love. Jimmie was also a deeply generous man who poured his heart and soul into the work of the nonprofit sector, helping to empower organizations as a visionary leader, mentor and teacher. He began his career with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago while completing his degree at North Park University and advanced quickly in the organization, becoming the director of a club program unit at the age of 24. He went on to obtain a Masters degree in Administration and Organizational Behavior from Aurora University and continued to work with the Boys & Girls Clubs for a total of 16 years. In 1979, he founded The Alford Group, a national consulting firm serving the nonprofit community in organizational development, philanthropy, executive search and knowledge management. The mission of the firm was core to Jimmie's work and legacy, "to strengthen the not-for-profit community." He formalized his efforts to educate the next generation of leaders by teaching graduate courses at the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management at North Park University and by leading the Nonprofit Executive Education Certification at Notre Dame University. Most recently, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Better Government Association of Chicago and the 2012 "Spirit of Youth" award from the National Runaway Switchboard. In 2007, he received an honorary Doctor of Laws from North Park University and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Aurora University. Even more than Jimmie's professional achievements, his profound ability to inspire and motivate remains his most celebrated quality. Over his lifetime, Jimmie has helped countless people realize their dreams through his leadership and guidance. His legacy will live on through his wife, Maree, his children and grandchildren and through every organization and individual he touched. Visitation and service will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church at The Chicago Temple, 77 W. Washington Street, Chicago, Illinois 60602. Public visitation begins at 1 p.m. and the memorial service at 2 p.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Jimmie R. Alford Scholarship Fund at North Park University, 3225 West Foster Avenue, Box 6, Chicago, Illinois 60625, www.northpark.edu/giving. It is hard to believe Jimmie has been gone for 22 years. I still remember working with him starting in 1980. I hope Maree and the family are doing well. It was so nice to see the pictures here.

I remember Jim from my teen years at Lathrop while I attended the Boys Club (at that time it didn't include "girls" in the title but we were there). He was part of a great team that guided us through wonderful activities and mentoring. I will never forget him and hope his family is healing although the loss of a loved one is never easy.

Dear Maree and family,
I was very sad to hear of Jimmie's passing in December. I had the absolute blessing of working with him during my time with Covenant Retirement. By example, Jimmie was an excellent teacher of the bigger picture of philanthropy. Through him I learned of the basic altruism of human beings and how my work contributes to a long term legacy of giving. Jimmie's legacy will continue to manifest for many generations. I send deepest condolences to all of you as you live in the memories of his life.

Maree and family -
I am so sorry to hear Jimmie passed away. My sympathies go out to you and your family. I am also sorry I will not be able to be there for the service and the celebration of his life. I hope you and your family are bearing up during this difficult time.
As you know, Jimmie and I had an 18 year history of working together to help organizations be more successful. Jimmie took me in as a new Vice President in 1980, despite my having no real experience doing consulting work or fundraising. The day I arrived (his second professional employee) was the day we moved into new office space in Rosemont. Jimmie was nervous about suddenly having lots of new commitments - an office lease, furniture, and me. But he always kept his eye on success and always followed through on his commitments to us as staff, and especially to our clients. I have never - before or since - met anyone who worked so hard. From the start he included me in almost everything we were doing, and he always treated me fairly and as a professional. We sometimes faced difficult times, but Jimmie got us through them without a lot of dramatics. And of course there were also the fun times, the adventures, and the feeling we were really doing good.
Among the many things that impressed me about Jimmie was his total focus on making our clients successful. He - and I - rightly believed that this was where we should keep our attention and the rest would follow. I know he had some difficult times, but those just made him work harder. He was very open to our suggestions and ideas as we all sought to improve our services, market the firm better, and grow at an appropriate rate. I learned a lot from Jimmie, and not just about consulting. Jimmie taught me persistence, sticking with what you believe is the right course, and not letting the down times get to you.
Everything that Jimmie achieved he earned, and rightfully so. But his ambition was not did not drive him to the exclusion of others; he always tried to keep us part of the process - a word he treasured.
The real tribute to his life and work is his larger family - the colleagues in the profession, those of us who worked with him, the many organizations that are now more successful, and those that they serve, help, entertain, and give joy.
Jimmie, old friend, your larger family will miss you, too.

Dear Maree and the entire Alford family. My sincere condolences go out to you. Jimmie was an amazing person and I was so saddened to hear of his passing. I had the pleasure of first meeting him many years ago when I worked at Chicago Children's Advocacy Center. Every time I saw him after that he always greeted me with a big smile and kind words. I had the recent pleasure of spending time with Jimmie at the workshop for new EDs at North Park University. He was so full of life and happiness, sharing new photos of his grandchild with everyone. I was so sad to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to Maree and his entire family. I was blessed to know him.
