William Bristow Obituary

William (Bill) Taylor Bristow Jr. of Oak Brook IL passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2017. Bill was born on July 11, 1926 in Chicago IL to William Taylor Sr. and Grace (nee Pearce) Bristow. He was very close to his only brother, Robert Alexander Bristow (deceased) throughout his life. He served during WWII in the Pacific theater aboard the Destroyer USS Franks DD554. His ship was in the first flotilla to secure Tokyo, Japan in 1945. Bill graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. He then began an exciting career with Harza Engineering that spanned over 40 years, working on significant national and international hydroelectric projects. Bill was the loving and loved husband of Jean (nee Bethig) for 63 years. He was the father of five sons and one daughter: William Taylor Bristow III (deceased), Brent (Anita), Bryan (Heather), Joy (Mark Larson), Reid (Bonnie) and Troy (Jen). They have 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Bill's family was his pride and joy; "family togetherness" was his favorite way to spend his time. He was an avid leader in his church, Evangelical Covenant Church of Hinsdale, Boy Scouts of America Troop #8, American Legion Post # 250, American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), Habitat for Humanity. Bill volunteered his expertise and time to design and build a hydroelectric power plant for a remote mission hospital in The Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) Africa. He was active in the annual USS Franks Reunion (his Navy family) until his death. Bill was a man of strong faith in his Lord Jesus Christ. He was honest, hard-working and his word was his bond. He had friends worldwide because he held people with the highest esteem. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Bill's life on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Evangelical Covenant Church of Hinsdale. 412 South Garfield, Hinsdale at 11:00 am. A private family graveside service will be held. Memorial gifts in Bill's honor may be directed to: Evangelical Covenant Church of Hinsdale, 412 South Garfield, Hinsdale IL 60521; Boy Scouts of America, Troop #8 412 South Garfield, Hinsdale IL 60521 or Samaritan's Purse - "Operation Heal Our Patriots Project" P.O. Mr.Bristow was always kind to my brother and I and always highly regarded in my neighborhood. He commended my achievement as an Eagle Scout as he was one also. He told me stories of his past as an Engineer and a Sailor for the Navy and it was from his stories that inspired to become an engineer and hopefully help many others just like he did. He will be greatly missed by many others and I.

Mr. Bristow's expertise was critical to the success of the Zulu Hydroelectric plant which he and my father built at Karawa in the D.R. Congo. This "little" project quietly provided immeasurable benefit to the work of the church in the Ubangi. Because of his dedication and volunteer commitment, this site provided power to the church, hospital, schools, corn grinders, coffee hullers, appropriate tech shops and other critical loads for over thirty years, saving the U.S. and Congo sister churches millions of dollars in avoided diesel cost and often providing the only electric light in the whole region. During the civil war, this hospital ministered to the victims of five different armies and the hydro quietly kept running even with lack of maintenance. Because of his dedication, the church has been far better equipped to carry out Christ's call "when I was sick...". My dad and I held him in the highest esteem, and dad looked forward to catching up each time he returned to the U.S. He was a good and Godly man and I know he is now in the presence of Jesus hearing the words "well done, my good and faithful servant". Peace to his memory.

Jean & Family:

Thank you for sharing this wonderful man. He was one of the kindest men I have ever been acquainted with and it was truly a blessing and honor to know him and be in his presence. His love for God and his family were an inspiration to all who know him and to me personally, and the love for him by his family was evidenced at the USS Franks reunion gatherings; assuredly a father who truly pleased his Father. Make he rest in peace and may we all sail together again in eternity. Love and Blessings

Dear Jean and Family: We count it an honor to have known Bill and worked with him on the Zulu Project at Karawa, Congo. He always made each person feel special and strived to give himself completely to that person or that project. He will be sorely missed by many, but especially by the Thornblooms. May God put loving arms around you and give you peace during these days.
