Gloria Schweigerdt Obituary

Gloria "Tippy" Schweigerdt was born on June 10, 1934 in Chicago,to Gottlieb and Emily (nee Hardt) Schweigerdt. She died Thursday, July 10, 2014 in Wauconda. Tippy worked as a meat cutter for Dominick's Finer Foods in Arlington Heights for over 20 years, and completed the last decade of her working career as an employee of Best Medical Practices in Long Grove. She played in the All- American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1950 to 1952. With her career highlight being the first woman to ever pitch a professional baseball game at "old Yankee Stadium". That game, on that day, she pitched a no-hitter. In 1988, she was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. She was an all-around sportswoman. Tippy loved to spend time with her family and was loved by all. Gloria is survived by her children, Gloria Schweigerdt, and Gordon (Sherri) Schweigerdt; granddaughter, Kelly Colleen Harrigan; great-grandchildren, Timothy and Antonio Alcantar; siblings, Adeline De Graf, and Robert (Mary Ann) Schweigerdt; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, William De Graf. Visitation Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights. Entombment at Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Advocate Hospice at www.advocatehealth.com/Hospice. .
