Alan Crane, 89, born on July 16, 1924, died peacefully early Sunday morning, February 23, 2014. Alan was the wonderful son of the late Sigmund and Bertha "Buddy" Crane. He was married to Lori Nee Meyerovitz for 41 happy and exciting years. Was the dearest and devoted father of Beth, Jennifer (Burt Weinstein), Bruce (Laura Cooper) Crane. Alan was also the cherished stepfather of Karen, David (Mary Kenney), and John (Lynn) Manilow. He was the very dear brother of the late Dody Weil (late Bert) and much loved uncle of Laura (Ed) Cohn and the late Andrew Weil. He was the dear brother-in-law of Marilyn Paul (Bob Holstein) and Robert (Ellie) Meyers. He was the proud and strong Papa of Carrie (Adam) Scott, Lindsay (Patrick) Fagan, Jeffrey, Brian, and Eric Smolensky, Sarah and Benjamin Crane, Alex and Amy Cole, Aaron, Jackson, Maya, Noah, Oliver, and Nate Manilow. He was the delighted great grandfather of Sheanan and Lennon Scott. Alan was a graduate of Northwestern University, which he attended after three years in the army during World War II. He loved the outdoors and was a dedicated golfer and an outstanding and powerful skier. An energetic and creative salesman in the folding carton industry, he started his own business in 1962 and built his fledgling company into a thriving factory employing over 200 people he cherished. He was a strong force in the folding carton industry, mentoring and helping others whenever he could. Alan was a shining beacon to all who knew him. With strength and energy he supported many charities and was a revered mentor in his very large and close family. He will be forever missed by those who loved him and to those who knew him, he was a mensch. Funeral services at Temple Beth Israel 3601 W. Dempster St., Skokie, IL, 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 26. Internment at Shalom Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hebrew Seminary, or Congregation Bene Shalom; both at 4435 W. Oakton St., Skokie, IL 60076.
