Bill Fredendall Obituary

William "Bill" James Fredendall of South Elgin, Ill., passed away on Jan. 30, 2014, following complications from surgery. He was 76. Loved ones will remember him for the way he lived his life - with gusto, generosity and humor. He leaves behind his loving wife, Fran; sister, Janet Freeland; niece, Deana Freeland; aunt Ela Schultz; cousins Roxana Schultz, Lynne Weinberger and Jeff Eckdhal; stepdaughters Linda Freeman, Kelly Scott and Suzann Kelly; friend Clair O'Neill and her daughters, Colleen O'Neill and Molly O'Neill-Schroeer, who were like daughters to Bill; and many more dear friends. Bill was a devoted son to his mother, Anita, who preceded him in death. A proud Chicagoan and American, Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps, piloting an A-4 Skyhawk fighter in the 1960s. He made a career of flying, spending 33 years as a pilot with Delta Air Lines, rising to the rank of captain. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He was happiest surrounded by nature, and supported many environmental and animal welfare causes. He made friends easily. He was witty, outrageous, sweet and mischievous. Bill Fredendall was a man with a big personality and an equally big love of life. He will be deeply missed. Services are pending; details will be available at www.countrysidefuneralhomes.com.

Fran,I can not believe it has been seven years already. It's strange how sometimes a loss feels like forever and other times it feels just like yesterday. I am sure you miss Bill everyday. You have many great memories I can only imagine. Bill was such an adventurist. I think of him often. Hope and pray you and your family are all well!

If I could change a few variables, I would be there at the services today to represent the Pribnow family. I am the youngest of the kids (at 55) and grew up knowing Bill, though I never knew him as my brothers did. I consider Bill a family friend and sure there are many stories we have to tell of him. He made a point to be at our parents' funerals and attended my wedding. I am sorry we are not there today. Loving thoughts from the Pribnows.

Growing up it was always a delight to get a visit from cousin Bill and to the day he died that never changed. He always had a line that would make you laugh. A man with that kind of wit will be missed. There is no doubt that there is a whole lot of laughter going on in heaven!

What a great guy!!! He will surely be missed by all of us in the Delta family, and certainly all of us who had the pleasure of getting to know him in the "d" pilot class of 1964.

My condolences to Bill's family. It was always fun to fly with Bill and learn of his latest endeavors. The authentic Teepee out west always provided for great stories. I certainly enjoyed flying with Bill over the years and he will be missed. A true ORD legend.

Fran, Our sincere condolences to you and all of Bills family. I first met Bill when we were 2nd Lts. In the Marine Corps, at Cherry Point. Then to my surprise, when I was hired by Delta, Bill was at the Chicago base, but hired a few years ahead of me. We lived fairly close to each other he in Wayne and Loretta and I in Bartlett, so we got together often. He got to know Loretta and I quite well, and our dog Taco just loved it when he would drop by. We also flew several time together on the DC-9 Him as the Captain and me as his Co-pilot. I even have a couple Duck Decoys that were carved and painted by is Sister Jan Freeland. Unfortunately we lost touch many years ago, and I consider that my loss, he was a good man.
