Frederic Wickert Obituary
Born in Chicago on March 9, 1912- died July 15, 2013 at 101. During his lifetime Fred lived in or traveled to all 7 continents. He spoke 23 languages from polite conversation to fluency. He received his undergraduate degree at UCLA and his PHD from University of Chicago in 1938. As a pioneer in the field of Industrial/Organizational Psychology,in WW II he devised tests for assignments of new draftees. He was later in the Korean War and retired from the Air Force as a full Colonel. After WWII, Fred became a Professor at Michigan State in both Psychology and Business, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1992. During his tenure, he received 9 Fulbright grants. He taught and consulted in Austria, Vietnam, France, Australia and Africa. In addition, Fred spent a year in Washington helping to start up the Peace Corp, was an author of several books and articles. He sat on the city Zoning Board, was very involved in the E.L. Senior Group,, and a Spanish Literature group. He was a lifetime member of APA, American Psychology Ass, and a lifetime member of Military officers Association of America, both in Michigan and Illinois chapters, and was a member of the Service Corp of Retired Executives. He donated his extensive classical music to MSU and much of his African and Pacific art collection is at Lansing Community College. Fred was preceded in death by his wife and traveling companion of 52 years, Dorothy Dodge Wickert. He is survived by daughters Susan V. Wickert and Melissa L. Grostick, as well as grandchildren Darcy Grostick Bersheim (Keith) of Buffalo Grove, Illinois and Daniel Grostick of Austin, Texas. A military service will held be at Fort Custer Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan on Aug 9th. A guest book has been created at Legacy.com.
