Helen Fitch Obituary

Helen S. Fitch, 89, formerly of Chicago and Western Springs, IL, passed away early Thursday morning, December 5, 2013, at Upjohn Community Care Center in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born on August 13, 1924 in Washington D.C., the daughter of Frederick and Mary Gertrude (Renner) Shearer. In 1945, Helen earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Ohio Wesleyan University. Helen was active in her church (Western Springs United Church of Christ) and her sorority (Delta Delta Delta) for many years. She was a volunteer at the Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, IL for 30 years. Helen loved to garden, to knit, and to visit with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.¿ On June 9, 1945, Helen was united in marriage to Morgan L. Fitch, Jr. who preceded her in death on November 18, 2013. Also preceding her in death were a brother, Ross Shearer and sister, Margaret Hickok. Surviving are her four children, Ruth (Timothy) White, Mary (James) White, Morgan IV (Patricia) Fitch and Frederick (Marie) Fitch; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister Harriett Burke of Boca Raton, FL.¿ Honoring Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Kalamazoo, MI. I'd like to express my sympathy to the Fitch family in the loss of mother and father, as I knew them both. They were fine patriots. Helen was a Republican election judge for many years. We had interesting talks quite a few years ago. I thank her for her service. She was a most accomplished and responsible person. Mary Longueil
