Even as time marches forward, my memories of you & Mars & folk dancing were cemented back to the early 80's when I was back in Chicago living in Rogers Park. I have made wonderful friendships because of "Sanna & Mars" and to date, talk about it to friends (old & new). Among the people I've mentioned this to is Marilyn Rea Beyer, Rich's successor on the WFMT Midnight Special. Two of the alumni from yours & Mars' weekly get-togethers I have promoted with her - Don Jacobs & Terran Doehrer. Besides our Monday nites at Levy Center, I still have a beautiful visual of the Evanston street parties also a "Sanna & Mars" signature. I was so awed of the synergy of you both - your energy, your compassion to teach, and both of you being you. I miss that terribly - I miss Mars, miss you - one of the most difficult things to give up when I relocated back to Milwaukee. When we get this terrible COVID-19 behind us, I look forward to coming down for the Evanston Art Fair and hoping we run into each other. G-d Bless.

I met Mars at folk dancing at the University of Chicago back in the 1970s. We danced many places over the years and it was fun.

In the obit, someone mentioned that folks were considering doing a book of Mars's jokes. I can recall Mars telling me jokes that I had told him 5 to 10 (or more) years before. I'd let him finish and I would tell him that I thought I had told him that joke years before. We'd have a laugh about it.

Sometimes when he told me one of my jokes, I'd wait until he got to the punchline and then beat him to it. We'd laugh about that too. Let me say that maybe slightly less than half of the jokes that Mars told me were jokes I had never heard before.

The last time I saw Mars was at the Monday night dance group - I believe it was two weeks before his passing. Yes, he had a new joke for me that evening.

I was always amazed that once he got a smart phone, he was constantly checking the sports scores. In the old days, we'd have to go out to listen to the car radio to get the latest scores. But once Mars got connected with his smart phone, he had to keep abreast of the latest scores.

I'll miss Mars a lot. (Paul Collins)

Sanna, I am so stunned & saddened tonight to learn of Mars' premature journey to heaven. I cherished our Monday nite Folk Dancing at the Levy Center during my Rogers Park time. Because of your leadership & making this group possible, I made precious friendships, including meeting a good friend/neighbor of my late Uncle & a "cousin-in-law" I never knew. I remember fondly a "street dance" you & Mars organized at your home during one Summer - - missed terribly being a part of the Folk dance festivities & camaraderie after relocating back to Milwaukee. This is just starting to sink in as I know this was totally unexpected. Miss you & offering my heartfelt condolences & best wishes to you and your family. Mars was so precious as you are ... Sanna,
I am so sorry for your loss. When I saw you and Mars in DC a couple of years ago, it felt like all was so right with the world. This is so unexpected. I hope you will find comfort in remembering all that was so good in Mars. Mars was also a great accordionist, and I can still remember him playing for us at performances. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
