Vladimir Gastevich Jr. Obituary
Vladimir Gastevich, Jr., 54, beloved husband and father, passed away at his home in Chicago on September 15, 2013, surrounded by those he loved most in the world, 4 years after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He is survived by his cherished wife of 23 years, Dora Gastevich (nee Kutyla); and adored children Alexander 22, Nicholas 21 and Olivia 16. Vlad was born in Louisville, KY, in 1958, and his family moved to Chesterton, IN in 1970. He had a standout career playing basketball at Chesterton High School, where he left holding the school records for points and FG's. Vlad then went on to obtain a BA in Business and Economics and an MBA in Finance (1981,1982) from the University of Chicago. In 1984, he joined the Sonnenschein law firm while getting his law degree from Northwestern University (1985). He remained at the law firm for four years, specializing in real estate development and commercial transactions. In 1985 while Vladimir was still with the Chicago law firm, he and his brother Eric, a home builder, formed ATG Corp., a real estate development and investment company. In 1988 he left his promising law career in Chicago to take on the role of CEO and General Counsel at ATG full time. The company, benefiting from his steady guidance, strong work ethic, and expertise in finance and real estate law, began an upward trajectory that continues to this day. But for all his accomplishments, Vlad's life was defined by his love of family. Vlad was a fixture at all his children's events and took great pride in their accomplishments. The loving family he created was typically the focus of conversation with friends and peers alike. He called his sons, "intelligent, athletic and strapping young men," and his daughter, "wise, beautiful and creative like her mother." In his loving wife, he enjoyed, in his words, "the best decision I ever made." It was both because of and for his family that he was able to forge on for over 4 years in the face of multiple surgeries and physical hardship. He brought optimism and tenacity to his battle against cancer, taking great care to protect his beloved family and leave them secure. To his final day, he was dedicated to them. Vlad was preceded in death by his parents Carol Lee Cordes and Vladimir Gastevich, Sr., his father-in law John and sister-in law Elizabeth (Scott). Vlad was an honorable and trustworthy brother to Elizabeth Lee (Kathleen) and Eric (Cathy), and half-sister, Gigi; an adored son-in-law to Angela and nephew to Anna Maria (Ed); a kind brother-in-law to Len (Cathy), Bernadette (Denny) and Robert, and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. It was Vlad's wish there would be no service. A private memorial will be planned.
