Dear Melanie and Richard,
I knew Charles at the University and worked in the Library Systems unit. Among many memories of Charles I recall Charles' generosity in inviting me to take walks with him at the lunch hour. Among memories of such walks several visits to the then recently opened Smart Museum at the University not far from the Regenstein Library stand out in my mind. I also remember Charles for asking the most basic, important, and fundamental questions in every meeting he attended, asked with a smile, "who called this meeting" and "why are we having this meeting". I was personally out of touch with Charles after I left the city and the University much to my regret. I am sure I am not alone in being touched by his humanity, wit, intelligence, and fundamental goodness. He leaves us with good questions: "why are we here; what are we doing?"

Melanie and Richard -- My sympathy. Charles will remain vividly in my memories, always. He was a brilliant, farsighted leader in information technology and bibliographic control, a wise person in a multitude of ways, and a wit. He was always the guy I wanted to go to lunch with at UofC, and we did so, often. Any and every gathering with friends in your Hyde Park home was sure to be filled with engaging stories and lots of laughter. Nell and I remember our first big night out after moving to NYC. I drove the four of us across the Brooklyn Bridge, got lost, then happily found our restaurant under the bridge and had a spectacular evening. Seeing Charles and Melanie was always high on our list of best things to do. I miss Charles more than words can say.
