1st LT Daniel A. Weiss

Daniel Weiss Obituary

1st LT Daniel Weiss, 25, served as a Rifle Platoon Leader in Attack Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was born in Santa Monica, CA. His brother wanted to name him Stinkor; his parents thought otherwise. His earliest years were spent in Culver City, CA, which he always considered home. In 1993, he moved with his family to Naperville, IL, where he went on to once get stuck in the revolving door at Michael Jordan's Restaurant, make the short movie "Coffee Boy", about a coffee boy, filmed on location in the woods behind his house, and graduate early from Naperville Central High School in order to enlist in the Army. Danny deployed three times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His service began as a Rifleman and SAW Gunner with the 173rd Airborne in Afghanistan in 2005. Between deployments, he earned a BA in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. In two years. Subsequently, he received his commission as an Infantry Officer, serving as a Rifle Platoon Leader in Afghanistan with the 1-17 Infantry, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He was then chosen to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment and assigned to 2nd Ranger Battalion at Fort Lewis, WA and deployed with 2/75 in late 2011. Following combat, he was assigned as a Rifle Platoon Leader in Attack Company. His awards and decorations include US Army Ranger Course and Airborne School, the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, and Airborne Wings. To become the best warrior possible, he refused to drink, smoke, or consume a frivolous calorie of any kind. He worked out voraciously and read with the same intensity on a multitude of topics, from Rudyard Kipling to Karl Pilkington. To extract a smile from Danny, all one had to do was mention Mr. Pilkington's constant struggles with his boiler. His smile snuck up the side of his mouth, no matter how hard he tried to stifle it, often growing into an undeniable laugh soon shared by all present. Sometime during the night of March 4, 2012, he took his own life. Danny will be remembered as a soldier, an officer, a leader; a son, a brother, my hero. He is survived by his parents, Andy and Julianne; his brother, A.J., and his brothers in arms. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Dear Danny,
We wanted you to know that you were a real American hero to your family, to your brothers in arms, to your friends and to our country. A real life, true hero. No greater sacrifice can a man give than to serve his country proudly. We always have been and always will be in awe of you. We are so sorry for your pain, but know that the pain is no more. Rest in eternal peace.

Our love and friendship to Andy, Julianne and AJ has always been a call away and always will be. Somehow, some way, you will find peace and happy memories will be all that fill your hearts. So many hearts broken, but Danny will find a way to help mend them over time.

To the Family of Daniel A. Weiss

I wish I had the right words to say at this time, but I know there are none. I grieve for the loss of your beloved son and I know that I cannot fathom the pain you must be feeling. Your son will not be forgotten and what he did to help protect our homeland and our freedoms. It was his life that made him a Hero. It was his noble path that made him an American Hero. It was his ultimate sacrifice that made him a Fallen Hero. May God carry him to Heaven on His precious wings and give him a palace to live in. I pray that our Heavenly Father above will grace you with His love, His comfort and His peace. Heaven's Gates now has a new handsome Marine standing guard.

Amen.

Weiss family,

I knew Danny as a friend of mine in Afghanistan 2009-2010. He deployed with one of my best friends ssg matt sanders to afghanistan in 2005 with the 173d. I met danny through him. I remember the first time I met him in the chow hall in fob frontenac, kandahar, afghanistan. I really enjoyed the conversations we would have about all the goings on of the unit and life at the time. I'm so sorry this happened. I wish one of us could have been there or would have known. My heart goes out to you guys today your son was truly a barrel chested freedom fighter, a leader of soldiers, and an all around great guy.

Best wishes and my sincere condolences

Danny came to 2nd platoon, A Co, 1-17 half way through our deployment in Afghanistan when our PL was injured. He instantly clicked with all the men in the platoon and was immediately welcomed. He was a true leader, no questions asked. Its funny how the trivial things matter soo much now, like giving eachother no less than 30-40 "high fives" throughout the day for no apparent reason. Its just the little things that mattered and made him "Sir, Lt Weiss, Bro", and over time to alot of us...just "Danny". We love and miss you brother *HIGH FIVE*

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1Lt Daniel A. Weiss our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Daniel. And to Daniel it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for his service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and for the sacrifice he made for his country while serving with the U.S. Army. No greater love and patriotism is shown than a man lay down his life in service to his country. Daniel, you are an appreciated Army Warrior and a true Patriot. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Daniel's family and loved ones.

Really wish i could make the funeral but Im currently deployed in Afghanistan. Im gonna miss you bro! RLTW!
