ELLEN V. HOWE
Obituary

Ellen Vaughan Howe, of Evanston IL and Sunset ME, died on June 25 at her Evanston residence. Mrs. Howe (known to her family and friends as Tina) leaves her husband of 69 years, Lawrence Howe; four children, James Howe of Cambridge, MA and Francestown, NH; Ellen Howe (Hoyle) of New York City and Farmington, CT; Eliza Earle of Winnetka, IL and South Orleans, MA; and Samuel Howe of Norwalk, CT and Sunset, ME; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Born in Boston, Mrs. Howe was raised by her father (her mother having died shortly after her birth) in Prides Crossing, a Boston suburb, with three siblings all of whom predeceased Mrs. Howe. In 1942, Mrs. Howe entered Smith College but left after one year to marry her husband, who had enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Her education later resumed, and in 1973 she received the B.A. degree from Northwestern University. Mrs. Howe was an enthusiastic sailor at her summer residence on the coast of Maine, and in Chicago she was an active participant in the cultural and arts scene of the city through a number of organizations, in particular The Friday Club. For 30 years (1974 to 2005), she served as volunteer Manuscript Assistant at the Northwestern University Library's Special Collections unit, processing into useful form many collections of important papers while also acting as a general assistant in the unit's operation. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Howe is planned for Saturday, July 14 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Rd., Winnetka. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested for the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, 75 Remittance Dr., #5828, Chicago, IL 60675, or for the Chicago Community Trust, 225 N. Michigan Ave., #2200, Chicago, IL 60601.
