I am moved by all the entries, but there is too little about Evette as an Illinois lawyer. She served with energy and distinction on many committees that strived to enhance the lives of children.

More than thirty years ago, Evette became part of the Board of Directors of a small school for emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, which I had founded in Uptown, Chicago. All of us at the school were so deeply grateful for her ongoing help and support as a state child advocate. I was very personally touched by her cheerfulness and sense of optimism. Of all of her strengths and interests, it is difficult to think of Evette without also remembering her dear Tekki. I believe that care of that small canine companion gave Evette the energy to keep going during many rough and sometimes lonely times. Those who share the "Rainbow Bridge" concept with me can smile at the image of their reunion.

Durham brought us together in 1971 but lots of shared experiences, memories, mutual friends, lots of similar interests, stories, love of animals, and helping each other through difficult times is what kept us friends for almost four decades.

Evette's family meant the world to her and I am glad she had the opportunity to be so close to them physically for the past few months. I also hope T and his family know what Joy they gave to Evette as well, especially after they relocated to Durham. Those kids kept her young.

I tried to think of what "Evette story" came to mind first and they were actually so many my head was spinning. I know the most dramatic one was that Evette saved my life 13 years ago after I had complications from surgery- she gave me the support and advice that truly save my life and I cannot even say how many people I have passed her wisdom onto in the hopes of changing someone's life like she changed mine.

Her kindness and generosity for letting my husband stay with her for a few months back in 2001, while I was living in another state and he was house hunting in Durham. Laughing daily on the phone hearing about their escapades brings a smile to my face even now.

Evette, your friendship will be truly missed and you will be alive in my heart with many happy and fond remembrances of a half a lifetime of friendship.

I believe in the after-life so I can imagine all the mental and physical pain left behind. And a grateful Ms. Tekki giving you kisses once more.

Evette was one of the most interesting people I have encountered. In so many ways she enriched the lives of those she befriended. I was one of the fortunate ones, and she will be sorely missed.

We have lost a wonderful friend. Always ready to lend a hand and always ready to have fun. We could have the most intense discussion about weighty topics and also "dish the dirt" like a couple of teenagers. Nothing was too much trouble or too hard to do. I'll miss her very much.

Evette was a truly great lady. She was wise and smart, always friendly. She seemed to carry her physical burden uncomplainingly and certainly with dignity. The little time I spent with her alone, mainly in the parking lot at JRC, was always enlightening, thought provoking and often funny. We shared stories of Africa - I was always amazed by her tales of traveling about the continent by herself as a young women. What an adventuress! We also shared a love of dogs. I will miss her.

Evette was a wonderful contributor to our weekly current events discussion group at OLLI at Duke University. We particularly appreciated her even handed and thoughtful contributions regarding the events of the week as her thoughts usually came from personal experience. We miss her.

So sorry to hear that Evette will no longer be with us at Lattamoor. She will certainly be missed by all of us as we remember fondly of the times she went around the "circle" in her motorized wheel chair with her little dog running along beside her. She always carried with her something for all the other dogs living in the area. Didn't know her well, but I'll still miss her. Eugenia Hunt, Durham, NC

I was fortunate enough to be Evie's sister-in-law for several years. Although that connection ended, our friendship never ended. She would refer to me as her sister, quite often, when introducing me to strangers.

Evie had a love for life. She had a soft and sensitive heart. She lived a most colorful life. Once you met Evie, you never forgot her. Her presence was felt by all who knew her.
She loved her family so much, especially her brother.
I will forever miss Evie. She will always hold a very special place in my heart.
My condolences to everyone in the family.

When ever I had thoughts of my Cousin Evie I realized that I always had a big smile on my face at the time of those wonderful thoughts. Some of the Watenmaker's had a reunion of sorts in Los Angeles on Sunday,July 12. We all raised our glasses to offer our deepest thanks to Evie for her impetus in getting us all together. Apparently Evie passed away shortly after we all made a toast to her. We all knew at the time that her condition was very grave. Her bright smile and wit and her spur of the moment trips will be missed. My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire family.

My thoughts and prayers are with Yvette
and her family at this difficult time. I will remember her every Christmas when I put up my outdoor lighted Nativity set which she seemed to enjoy so much and always had kind words to say about it. I will miss seeing her walking her dog on her scooter in Lattamoor. She will be missed.

Evette will be deeply missed.
My prayers are with her immediate and extended family.
When I first her years ago as a naive and young 18 year old, she was larger than life. She had traveled the world and had been to exotic places I had only read about. She was the most worldly person I had ever met. She set a standard for me to learn and appreciate all parts of the world.

Over the last few years I have come to understand she has bit of southern in her soul, and this made me love her all the more. I will surely miss her contagious laugh. May the comfort of God wrap his arms around her family during this time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.

I enjoyed talking with Evette about family, especially her great-nephew and my granddaughter, local "doings", the Rice Diet, religion, flowers, our houses, her travels, and many other topics. She always greeted me cheerfully even though I know she had reason to feel otherwise many times. I'll miss seeing her scooter coming down the street in any kind of weather with Tiki trotting along beside wearing a neckerchief.

I, too, was sorry to hear of Yvette's death. I'll miss seeing her around the neighborhood on her scooter. It will also be sad not to see her at all the Duke basketball games. We had many discussions about the boys and girls teams and I don't think she missed any games. She was a loyal fan and I think that gave her a lot of pleasure.

My condolences go out to the family. Ann Dumas, neighbor.

Evette was a good friend and neighbor. I enjoyed talking to her while we walked our dogs together. She was brilliant, interesting and loving, and we helped each other through much suffering. She loved good movies, current events and she loved all dogs! Tekki was a wonderful Bichon who was fortunate to be especially loved by Evette, and to live the life of a "lucky dog" with her. I, too, was fortunate to be loved by Evette and to love her. We have prayed for each other during the past years, and now I pray for you, her family. Candy Lockamy, Lattamoor neighbor
