John and I were garden neighbors at McCormick. I always enjoyed listening to what he had to say and learned a lot from him.
He was a true lover of nature and I admired his determination to garden even when it had become physically difficult. I will always remember him sitting for hours on the ground, tending the rose beds.
My sincere condolences to his family,

John gardened the plot next to mine at the McCormick Community Gardens. I learned a lot from him. I missed him when he gave up his plot. May he rest in peace.

I am truly sorry to hear about the passing of my friend and fellow gardener. John and I spent almost two weeks side by side, planting the rose bed in front of the McCormick Community gardens. I heard many stories of his life over those days and I gained such an appreciation for the knowledge, talents and great community spirit of this wonderful man. He is going to be missed.

To my cousins and their families, I celebrate Uncle John's life with you. He was a joyful man with one of the best smiles ever. He created beautiful flower gardens around his home and at the church he attended. I loved his story telling when he recalled his Swedish heritage and his days growing up in Swedesburg, Iowa. Uncle John and Aunt Peg hosted many family gatherings at their Evanston home. I always looked forward to those times. I know my parents and my brothers enjoyed his presence on their bike trips. After he gave-up riding his bike, Uncle John would drive ahead on these trips to select a campsite in preparation for the tired bikers. I have great memories of a family reunion at Uncle John's condo and later a birthday celebration at his beautiful association dining room. I am sad that his generation of Laugers is no longer with us, but I expect there is celebration in heaven as they reunite.

I regret that I don't remember meeting Mr. Lauger in the many times I was in Chicago, but I know of him and the wonderful man he was. My deepest sympathy to his sons and family. May you find comfort in the many memories you have of his love and caring in your lives.

To the Children, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren of "Mr. Lauger": I am fortunate to have earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 12 in Evanston. "Mr. Lauger", as I knew him growing up in Scouts, took me under his wing and taught me much of the skills I needed to earn the various merit badges for the Eagle rank. I have many fond memories of marching around in Perkins woods learning various orienteering skills, knots, and other craft. Mostly though, I remember the kindness and care of one man for a boy growing up--I now live in a national park, and the seeds of that passion for the outdoors were sowed in those various one-on-one journeys with "Mr. Lauger". I am forever grateful for those experiences. For me, human beings dont get any better. He was a very fine man. My condolences, Jeff Willemain
