Mary E. Bacom Obituary
Mary E. Bacom of Glen Ellyn, Beloved wife of the late John for 58 years, Loving mother of Kathleen Bacom, Nora (Lawrence) Jackson, Patricia (Jeff) Bacom- Optholt, Mary (John) Kronenburger, Cecelia Bacom (Timothy Bannon) and Jean Bacom (David Detmer), Dear Grandmother of 22, Great-Grandmother of 15, Devoted daughter of the late Michael (Late Ann) McGroarty, Fond sister of the late Charles, late Edward, late James and the late William McGroarty and the late Margaret Schrengost, Aunt of many nieces and nephews. Mary Bacom grew up in rural Swoyersville, Pennsylvania. She was high school valedictorian and the first in her family to finish college, graduating with a business degree from Misericordia University, in Dallas, PA. She took a job as a secretary in Washington D.C. during the war, where she met and later married John Bacom. They moved to Oak Park where they raised six daughters. After her children were grown, Mary returned to college for her teaching certificate and taught elementary school and tutored adults. Throughout her life, nature was her sustaining interest and joy. Mary was an avid gardener and longtime member of the Violet Chapter of the Glen Ellyn Garden Club. She helped maintain public spaces as well as her own large perennial garden. She donated hundreds of plants to the annual garden sale and donated countless plants to friends and family over the years. She also volunteered at the Willowbrook Nature Preserve. She savored her annual spring pilgrimage to the Morton Arboretum to see the daffodils and Virginia bluebells in all their glory. She was a longtime member of St. Petronille church in Glen Ellyn and active in the small Christian community group for years. She loved to work crossword puzzles and was a fierce competitor at all variety of word games. She was also an avid reader, especially of poetry, fiction and a good mystery. Above all, she was a kind, supportive and strong mother, wife and friend. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 17 from 3 - 8 PM at Leonard Memorial Home 565 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, Funeral Mass to be held on Monday, February 18 at 10 AM. at St. Petronille Church 420 Glenwood Ave., Glen Ellyn, Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, donations to Dominica Literacy Center, 260 Vermont Ave., Aurora, IL. 60505 or the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, 493 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.
