Timothy J. O'Shaughnessy Obituary
Timothy J. O'Shaughnessy, 68, residing in Notre Dame, IN, passed away at 8:52 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, 2012 in Dujarie House. He was born Dec. 9, 1943 in Wichita, KS, to the late John J. and Eileen A. O'Shaughnessy. On April 29, 1967 in Chicago, IL, he married the former Sheila Fisher, who survives. Tim and Sheila lived in Alexandria, VA, before moving to Notre Dame, IN, in October of 2011. Tim grew up in Winnetka, IL, and went to Loyola Academy on Chicago's Northside. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1965 and served in the Vietnam War as a Naval officer. Married in 1967, Tim and Sheila lived in Japan for two years on a Naval assignment. They moved in 1969 to Alexandria, VA, where Tim started a computer software company that organized sales inventory for the Navy. He received a master's degree in English from North Carolina University and did doctoral work and teaching at George Washington University. He was an active volunteer and board member at his children's schools: St. Mary's Catholic School and St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School in Alexandria and Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. In 1995, he started a company that provided geriatric psychological services to nursing homes. He recently served for seven years as the president of the I.A. O'Shaughnessy Foundation, was a member of the Knights of Malta, and shared his experience in philanthropy with Catholic organizations, including FADICA and Christo Rey and San Miguel schools. He enjoyed travel, literature and theater, golf, skiing, cheering on the Irish, and any activities with his children and grandchildren. In addition to his loving wife, Sheila, Tim is survived by one daughter, Lael O'Shaughnessy of Alexandria, VA; two sons, Timothy D. (Robyn Anguish) O'Shaughnessy of Chicago, IL, and Brendan (Laurel) O'Shaughnessy of South Bend; and three grandchildren, Maeve, John and Katherine O'Shaughnessy. He is also survived by one sister, Mary (Charles Van Gilder) O'Shaughnessy of Chicago; two brothers, Terry (Karen) O'Shaughnessy of Chicago and Dennis (Helen) O'Shaughnessy of Naperville, IL; one sister-in- law, Marianne O'Shaughnessy of Santa Fe, NM; as well as several nieces and nephews. Tim was preceded in death by one brother, Michael O'Shaughnessy. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Friday, April 27, 2012 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Private graveside services will be held in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012 in Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions in memory of Tim may be given to the University of Notre Dame's O'Shaughnessy Undergraduate Fund, supporting students who study language abroad, care of the College of Arts and Letters, 100 O'Shaughnessy Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
