I just learned Mr. Phillips passed last year. I was fortunate to have him as a mentor and teacher in 1966/67. He made such a difference in my life. He motivated me and led by example. One day when I was walking by his house he invited me in and we talked for a few minutes until he heard the crushing sounds of grinding trash. He stopped our conversation, walked to the refrigerator, pulled out a couple cans of Coke and hurried down the stairs to give two thirsty garbage collectors a refreshing drink while thanking them for their service. He appreciated people.
He played baseball with my high school contemporaries and possessed great athletic skills effortlessly hitting deep fly balls to the right field line out of our reach. His smile was infectious and his humility admirable.
I remember wanting to learn how to type. Back then, the Remington typewriter was unyielding in its demand to be perfect in executing every letter. One mistake could not be digitally erased. I was beyond terrible. Mr. Phillips was unbelievably patient. He actually stood by me as I pecked on this keyboard that revealed my constant mistakes for weeks on end. Extraordinary patience and why? Because he cared.
How do you say thank you to someone who intersected your life and steered you in the right direction, without you knowing it at the time, and gave you the confidence to know you can succeed. I would not be who I am without Mr. Phillips. My heart grieves that he is no longer with us and I regret not reaching out to him years ago and telling him how he changed my life.
My sincere belated condolences to his family.

I can remember so well the smiling face of young Bill as I played with him in grammar school at Burnside. Several years later I met up with again at Fenger. And many years later, we met here at The Villages, Florida. He never changed! A great guy..

My deepest sympathy to the Phillips family. I had the pleasure of cooking many breakfasts for him at the Ranch Restaurant before it closed. We would sit and go down memory lane about students and teachers at MPHS. He certainly was an inspiration and will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

have thought of him so very often since leaving high school. He was such a positive force in my life. When I list my top 3 teachers in my life, he has always been one of the 3. I just this weekend put my "How to Win Friends and Influence People book, into a pile of books I am weeded. Yes, it is the same, old, copy that I had from high school. Maybe I need to put it back on the shelf. RIP, Mr. Phillips. You have been influential in so many lives.

My deepest sympathies to the Phillips family.. I'm saddened to have learned of his passing. Morgan Park Alumni missed him at our multi-class reunion this past October, so many had hoped to see him there. He was such a nice man, a good teacher and a positive light beaming his bright smile one could feel all the way down the hall at Empehi. May he rest in peace and his memory be eternal!

To Mr Phillips entire family: he was the most amazing person I ever met. Without his guidance, and honestly frank chastising when I was off course, I would have nothing. I was fortunate enough to take him to lunch years ago and was able to tell him how important he was to me, and to so many others. A great man, and a great mentor. I will miss him very much.
