Brother Joseph Seiler Obituary
Brother Joseph (Leo Wilfrid) Seiler, 92, died on January 29, 2014 at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago. A De La Salle Christian Brother for 74 years, he was born in Chicago, son of Peter and Clara (Kiefer) Seiler. He graduated from La Salle Institute in Glencoe, MO, and entered the novitiate of the Brothers in 1939. The following year he professed his first vows, and in 1946 he made his final vows in Winona, MN. He earned a BA from St. Mary's College in Winona and an MA from St. Louis University. During his years as an educator he taught at St. Mel in Chicago, St. George in Evanston, St. Francis in Wheaton, Driscoll Catholic in Addison, and Montini Catholic in Lombard. He also taught at Boystown in Nebraska, Christian Brothers H.S. in St. Joseph, MO, and La Salle Institute in Glencoe, MO. He retired in 2001 and recently lived in Westmont. Survivors include nieces Patricia Coffey of San Leandro, CA, and Maureen McCarthy of Hometown, IL; nephews Thomas McCarthy of Mokena, Peter Seiler of Omaha, and Steven Coffey of San Jose; and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. He was predeceased by three brothers who were also Christian Brothers: Brothers Louis de La Salle, Joel Adrian, and Jarlath Peter. Visitation will be 2:00 pm at Holy Trinity Church, 111 South Cass Ave. in Westmont, IL, on Monday, February 3, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00 pm. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Wildwood, MO. Memorials may be made to the De La Salle Christian Brothers Retirement Fund, 7650 S. County Line Rd., Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
