Evelyn Banks Obituary
Evelyn Carolyn Banks (nee Peterson) age 92, of Chicago, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from complications arising from Parkinson's Disease. She was born in Trent, South Dakota, to the late Alfred and Caroline Peterson (nee Andersen). Evelyn graduated from Trent High School in 1939; and, received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Pikes Peak Community College, Colorado Springs, CO in 1978. She married the late Hollis R. Been in 1943, and they lived together in Midland, Michigan before relocating to Colorado Springs in 1970. After Hollis died in 1990, Evelyn married the late John L. Banks in 1992. They moved to Sun City, Arizona, and lived there for several years, before returning to Colorado Springs to be near Evelyn's son, Laurin A. (Flora) Been in 1999. John passed away in 2002; and, Laurin, in 2006, whereupon Evelyn moved to Chicago to be near her daughter, Valerie Lober. Evelyn worked as a licensed practical nurse at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs until she retired in 1986. She found great meaning in offering in-depth compassion to her cancer patients. During her nurses' training, she achieved the award for highest academic achievement; during her employment, Evelyn was chosen "Employee of the Month" on several occasions. During the last three years of her life as her health began to change, Evelyn received constant and loving care from her two caregivers, Margie Uy Panaga and Marivel Uy Corporal. She will forever be remembered for her sense of humor; her strong, positive attitude; and her gentleness. She is survived by one daughter, Valerie B. Lober (nee Been) of Chicago; one daughter-in-law, Flora J. Been, nee Vinson; one grand-daughter, Caroline (Michael) Slayter (nee Been), one great-grandson, Twain A. Slayter, all of Colorado Springs; one sister-in-law; several cousins; and, numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and two late husbands, Evelyn was preceded in death by her two sons, Laurin A. and Jeffrey F. Been; her son-in-law, Ross R. Lober; and, three brothers, Melvyn, Reuben, and Lloyd Peterson. Remembrances in Evelyn's name, sent to Spiritual Care Department at Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center, 2050 Clare Court, Glenview, IL 60025 (www.carecenter.org), would be greatly appreciated by the family. A graveside service and interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, 1005 N. Hancock, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80903 on March 12, 1014. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at Fourth Presbyterian Church, corner of Michigan Avenue and Delaware Street, in downtown Chicago, at a later date.
