Dennis Ives Obituary
icon Dennis J. Ives, 77, passed away February 27, 2014, from pancreatic cancer. He was born in Covington, Ky., in 1936, and moved to the Chicago area in the 1970s. The life Denny lived was an inspiration to all who knew him: friend to all, the consummate family man, and a gentle prankster at heart. He enjoyed a 32-year career with AT&T and performed a variety of management roles in Engineering and in Operations. Following AT&T, he accepted an entrepreneurial leadership position with eSpire Communications. He maintained strong ties with former colleagues from both companies, whose common experience was of a man who always did the right thing and always inspired others to go the extra mile. He played with the Valley View Men's Golf League for 40 years. After retirement he participated in golf leagues at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn, annual tournaments, and weekly games with his buddies and his wife and family. But golf wasn't his total focus in retirement. He also delivered meals to seniors for many years, cultivating many happy girlfriends in his weekly cheerful visits. He drove cancer patients to their medical appointments, serving as a testament to them that life goes on in many beautiful ways even after a diagnosis no one wants to hear. He served in many volunteer capacities at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church. His faith was unshakable, a faith that he lived rather than preached. He and his late wife of 39 years, Harriet, modeled the best ideals of a happy, love-filled family. He was the patriarch of three children and twelve grandchildren, each of whom loved nothing better than to bask in Pop's company. He generously shared his family and friends, especially the couples group, when he remarried in 2003, and embarked on a second successful chapter in marital life. He is survived by his wife Jean; son Michael (Kathleen) and grandchildren Mathew and Caitlin; son Martin (Katherine) and grandchildren Jacob, Calvin, JT, Celeste, Charlotte, and Otto; daughter Melissa (Anthony Wichhart) and grandchildren Emma, Miranda, Grace, and Samuel. He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet (1998) and infant daughter Mary (1963), as well as his older brother, Harry (2000), and his twin brother, Don (2001). Visitation Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Williams-Kampp Funeral Home 430 E. Roosevelt Rd. Wheaton. Funeral prayers Friday, 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home processing to Mass at 10 a.m. at St James the Apostle Church 480 S. Park Blvd. Glen Ellyn 60137. Interment St. Michael Cemetery Wheaton. Memorials may be made to DuPage Senior Citizens Council, 1919 S. Highland Ave., Suite A-210, Lombard, Ill. 60148, and any Salvation Army. Information at www.williams-kampp.com or (630) 668-0016.
