TED RUDNICK Obituary
TED J. RUDNICK, age 94, of Sun City West, AZ, and formerly of Skokie, IL, passed away on February 13, 2014, of natural causes. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Victoria "Vicky," nee Szymczak; his sister, Harriet Bergstrand; his brother, Richard Rudnick; and ten nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Edward Rudnick; a brother, Bruno Rudnick; and a sister, Adele (Kersey) Collins. Ted was born Thaddeus J. Rudnick on July 26, 1919, in East Chicago, IN, to Maximilian and Julia Rudnick. He attended Lane Tech High School in Chicago. After attending barber college, he began a career as a barber in 1938 working for his father. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, he served in England, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. He was a medic, an ambulance driver, and also worked as a barber in the U.S. Army (even cutting the hair of Bob Hope and General Patton). Ted served in the Italy campaign, the "Battle of the Bulge," and the army that advanced toward Berlin. Returning from WWII in 1945, he worked again for his father until Maximilian passed away in 1953. In 1954, he moved his father's barber shop to Touhy Avenue in Skokie, off the Edens Expressway, naming it Ted's Barber Shop. Ted and Vicky were wed in 1948, enjoyed polka dancing, and traveled considerably in the Chicago area for dancing events. Ted was an active member of the Father Joseph C. Stroot Council No. 3243, Knights of Columbus, in Skokie, and the Skokie Valley Post No. 3854, VFW. He sold his business around 1987, and Vicky and he moved to Sun City West, where they enjoyed their retirement. They did more dancing and playing cards with friends, and Ted was both an avid bowler and model plane builder and flyer. A gentle man, Ted was loved dearly by Vicky, his brothers and sisters, ten nieces and nephews, and many friends in both Skokie and Sun City West. Visitation Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. until time of Prayers, 10:15 a.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Road, Skokie. Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Skokie. Interment, with Military Honors, St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery, Niles. Funeral information: (847) 673-6111 or www.habenfuneral.com.
