Vernita Gray Obituary
Vernita Gray, one of Chicago's longest and most prolific activists for LGBT rights, pronounced March 19, 2014. Beloved wife of Pat Ewert, cherished daughter of Fran Gray Hairston (nee Kersh), survived by a host of relatives in Chicago and East St, Louis. Gray, a native Chicagoan, attended St. Mary's High School, and graduated from Columbia College. A longtime cancer survivor, Gray lost her battle March 18 just before midnight, with her wife and mother by her side. Celebration of life Monday, March 31, 1pm, at Goodman Theater, 170 N Dearborn St, Chicago, IL 60601. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Affinity Community Services, Broadway Youth Center, or Center on Halsted Youth Program.
