Her more rewarding occupations were wife, mother, homemaker, Cub Scout den mother, Sunday school teacher, band mom, deacon, weekend farmer, and community volunteer. She also spent countless hours with parents, sister, in-laws, uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces, schoolmates, and neighbors, as devoted family member, mentor, support, and friend. In 1985, she found a new calling as grandmother "Yia-Yia". She was active in and/or supported the American Association of University Women, the Norwegian-American Genealogical Society, the American Hellenic Educational and Philanthropic Association, the Chicago Historical Society, and the Newberry Library. A world traveler, Melpomene visited with her husband in their retirement years Norway, Greece, Great Britain, France, and Germany, among other places. Melpomene was multilingual in English, Greek, German, and Norwegian. Her world citizenship also extended to the kitchen, where she prepared traditional and contemporary dishes from Greece, Norway, Japan, Italy, and Mexico as well as American favorites. Besides her three sons, Melpomene is survived by her older sister, Athena Poulos of Tucson, Arizona; her grandchildren, Austin, Alexander, Alana, April, Eric, and David, two step grandchildren, Jonathan and Michelle, and great-grandson, Tyler.
